Re: Evolution and free will

Why does evolution grant such a feeling, having free will, if it is an illusion? Free will is absolutely unnecessary in a deterministic world so why should we have it? No need to say that our world is not always deterministic because of the existence of options. Dear bahman, I find it both possible...

Re: What is the good life?

But, is it problems with research methodology that you are interested in…? Humbly Hermit Ok, so my experience with psychiatrists goes like this, just so you can comprehend what I see as a fail in whatever methdology they employ:- In late 2017 I get forced out of a really good job in IT by God - scr...

Re: What is the good life?

Sorry Hermit to pick on U...but I did have rather a larf with the humans (shrinks) that thought that going to university would eventually mean they could comprehend other minds (and of course reality), in particular, mine ---- better than I could comprehend my own analysis of aforementioned reality...

Re: A friendly forum?

Over the years, I have earned quite a few descriptive adjectives: father, husband, white, cis male, retired, software designer, autist, armchair philosopher, disabled, lover of music and hi-fi, are just a few. Many philosophy forums are dominated by ad hominems , straw man attacks and trolling, esp...

Re: Schrodinger's Cat Thought Experiment

A: Are there two worlds? B: Which world is more fundamental? One world, many witnesses.. so differing styles of witnessing/experiencing that one world. Does one aspect need be fundamental, over another? It sounds to me that you have removed the emotional aspect of thought from the observation, so t...

…/Roy opens the box without any thoughts entering his consciousness. He simply witnesses free from interpretation./… Dear roydop, Setting aside the two Q’s in your OP for a moment; is it not in fact so that if you are seeing a cat at all, you are already interpreting the information before you? My ...

Re: A Theory of Enlightenment: The number system as a model of the evolution of consciousness

Hello again roydop, I thought you had posted this in the maths section to receive feedback on your ideas from mathematicians. Most of us don’t possess in-depth understanding of every single aspect involved in the bigger picture of a new perspective forming in us, so that seemed like a very mature, r...

Re: Exactly Where Am I?

So if I have an arm amputated I would probably stop having sensations from that arm, however, would I cease to exist? What about a part of the brain? If a part of my brain were amputated, say a part attached to a cancerous section, would I cease to exist? Which part of the brain would need to be am...

Re: What is the good life?

Perhaps with the absence of desires, true happiness means being satisfied to the point one does not have desires. In today's society one could call this blasphemy against life itself! Dear reasonvemotion, I was reminded of these: https://twitter.com/hphilosopher/status/561821946728710144?s=21&t...

Re: Exactly Where Am I?

I suppose in some sense I seem to be located in my body. If my body is not near the computer, then I am not near the computer. Suppose I am now looking at my computer screen. If I get up and walk away from the computer screen, into the kitchen, I am no longer near it. I would then be looking at the...

Re: What is the good life?

Is it the kind of life that people with a lot of money are able to have and as they toast each other with a glass of champagne, someone says.... "I wonder what the poor people are doing this evening? muffled laughter. Is it the modest timber house on acreage in a remote bush location with your...

Re: God: a hypothetical consideration of implications!

Hermit, from what you have posted it is little wonder that you chose psychology as your vacation. However, when you state that in your late 20s you then had 'faith', I would like to know what exactly it is that you have faith in, as it is rather open ended and could be interpretted in multiple ways...
