Re: New Guy
Growing up, Christianity was my entire world. Many people have told me that when one grows up in a Christian environment, one's faith is usually insincere. However, this was absolutely not the case in my situation. I was made to memorize Scripture at the age of four years. At thirteen years of age,...

Re: What causes porn addiction???
To argue that fantasy objectifies someone in exactly the same way as literally acting out is just another way society condones destructive behaviours. No-one has argued that a fantasy objectifies someone in exactly the same way as literally action it out. The argument is that fantasy objectifies so...

Re: What causes porn addiction???
Hi Camus; I'm "street" in an inner city, and live in a rough part of town. What I see is remnants of porn in abandoned buildings (mattresses, wirings pulled out from video cams, used (ugh) condoms, needles)... none of which indicates porn stars who interview with PhD students. No offense....

Re: What causes porn addiction???
Human trafficking is bad in and of itself - of course it is. But does anyone actually believe that the people working in porn have been 'human trafficked'? Why would any porn producer traffick or drug humans when there is a surplus of people desperate to get into porn? The casting agencies always ha...

Re: New Guy
Hi OutOfNonage I'm sorry to hear that you renounced Christianity. That is your decision, of course, but I found that the more I studied philosophy the closer I got to Christianity.

Re: Hello everyone
This thread probably isn't the place to discuss Meursualt and The Stranger . It is worth discussing though. Most commentators, and as one of the referees for the Camus Society Journal I see a lot of commentators!, agree that Meursualt does in fact show a lot of concern for his mother. One of the mai...

Re: What causes porn addiction???
Nicus, I can understand what you are saying and how you feel about porn. But if we're going to discuss it we need to discuss it carefully. You seem to be only describing a particular type of porn. No soft-core porn contains sexual penetration (UK definition) and so can not include the type of scenes...

Re: What causes porn addiction???
Firstly Nicus , you have offered nothing but opinion, which of course you are entitled to do but this is the Philosophy Now forum rather than the Opinion Now forum. When discussing porn addiction I have given my professional opinion on what I have learned from clients about this addiction. This thre...

Re: What causes porn addiction???
Calling 'sexist' a man who considers porn disgusting and base is something very funny, to say the least. Porn is an industry dedicated to promoting the worst type of misogyny, i.e., the idea that women are only good when they can be used as sexual objects. While I'm not calling you sexist, there ar...

Re: What causes porn addiction???
I do not actually understand what's the 'pleasure' a man seeks in porn, since the scenes are totally artificial and the situations described impossible to happen in practice. The scenes are not totally artificial. They are are genuine pornographic acts. The impossibilty of what is depicted happenin...

Re: Hello everyone
Another group of patients might be those who are too bored to exist. Or too indifferent. The hero of "The Stranger" by Albert Camus was like it. Meursault wasn't bored or indifferent. He refused to lie to himself or pretend to believe in things to please other people. He didn't have probl...

Re: Hello everyone
Not a joke! Existential therapy is a type of psychotherapy (such as psychoanalysis, gestalt therapy, cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), rational emotive behavioural therapy (REBT), family therapy, and so on are different types of psychotherapy). Existential therapy, as the name suggests, is often ...

Re: What causes porn addiction???
To find and add to the collection is the main drive. Most porn addicts (I'm only referring to the ones I have met but they tell similiar stories) spend little time looking through their collections, most time is spend finding new additions. Obviously they use the porn but the urge seems to be to fin...

Albert Camus Society meeting 25th July 2009
I'm not sure if this is the correct forum for this post, perhaps a moderator will move it if it isn't. The 2nd Annual Camus Society meeting will be on Saturday the 25th July 2009. The meeting will be held in the Swedenborg Society building in London (almost opposite the British Museum, nearest tube:...

Re: What causes porn addiction???
As a psychotherapist I have had a few clients presenting pornography addiction. This 'addiction' is self-diagnosed and not like addiction to cigarettes or drugs. The biggest problem is that the use of porn (especially internet porn) becomes part of the clients life. That is, they spend hours and hou...
