Re: a philosophical mission statement

and why do we have such difficulties uniting words and actions? it lies in the nature of our beliefs.. most of our values and beliefs are ''ad hoc'' beliefs and values of the moment.....or as I have stated before, that our beliefs and values are situational... as is our ethics... we practice situati...

Re: a philosophical mission statement

given the above statement, what becomes of philosophy? What is the role of philosophy given a world where we have vast differences between what we believe in and what we act upon.....there is a vast gulf between actions and beliefs.... and philosophy today is to reduce if not to eliminate those diff...

a philosophical mission statement

In continuing my Rorty research and in thinking... Rorty began his philosophical career as a pragmatist... what we search for is the ''truth'' and we act on that..... Pragmatism: philosophy... an approach that assesses the truth of meaning in terms of their practical application... but in thinking a...

Re: Philosophy as representations

K: so, the question becomes, what direct knowledge of our world or of our universe that is first hand, direct knowledge of the world, do we actually have? K: is this actually an epistemological question or, is this something else? Rorty makes the argument that epistemological questions, based on wha...

Re: Philosophy as representations

Language itself, is pure representations... a word represents something... use the word dog... that represents the canine species we refer to as dogs... as a universal... not a specific dog, but all dogs.... Now when I think of a dog, I think of a very specific dog name Troubles... the dog I grew up...

Re: Philosophy as representations

Now comes the tricky part… is our representations or maps, the ''TRUTH?" I believe that part of the problem of ''finding the ‘‘TRUTH’’ in Philosophy comes from the fact that we use maps and models to describe the ‘‘TRUTH’’ and map/models can be and I am willing to bet, are usually wrong… we can...

Philosophy as representations

I am still deep into reading Rorty’s ‘‘Philosophy and the Mirror of Nature’’ In part one, he attacks the philosophers use of representations… Which got me to thinking about the idea of representations itself… What exactly is ‘‘representations?" The idea of representations is an old one in Philo...

Re: to tell a story

and the soul, and the soul, what does she pine for? I don't know, I don't know, what does she pine for? 🤔 K: for many, it is unity of soul, to become one with.... but how is that possible if we don't even know ourselves? to know thyself is to know what is possible for human beings... and to unite o...

Re: to tell a story

but Kropotkin, you contradict yourself, you hold that man is of many natures... and all of them contradict each other... your reply, sir? I am a man, a human being of many values and beliefs... I am not a one cell amoeba, or a rock that has but one meaning, one purpose.... I am human and thus many d...

Re: to tell a story

a modern search is for the soul, the connection between the soul and the eternal spirit... and we search the depths of the soul to discover what miracles lie in the depth of our soul.... and like an onion, we peal and we peal and we peal the soul away until we discover that there is nothing there......

Re: to tell a story

ask yourself, where are the Artist, Poets, writers that promote the human self? why have we lost the ability to tell an Artistic story? Because we have drank the modern age too deeply... we have facts and data and numbers and the bottom line..... but we don't have beauty and love and the sunsets in ...

Re: to tell a story

In telling a story, one is creating, it is an act of creation, even true stories.... and the creativity in stories lies in our choices made within the story..... let us say, I want to tell the story of philosophy..... who I choose to put into that story as well as who I remove from that story change...

Re: to tell a story

In my precocious youth, I read a lot of poetry.... I read all of the familiar suspects, Tennison, Goethe, Longfellow, Byron, Whitman....I loved the English Romantic poets... and my soul was enthralled... I was moved and shamed and I cried at the beauty of it all...... I wrote some poetry myself, but...
