Re: What do you think? Do we live in a simulation?

Elon Musk and others think we may live in a simulation. What do you think? Is it probable or plausible? It would certainly explain time dilation/relativistic phenomena. But these have ALREADY been explained, anyway. The inability of the underlying hardware to handle infinite precision/infinite valu...

Re: make truth?

No, ontology deals with what IS, and epistemology only with what part of it each of us KNOWS. Idiot. How could anyone ever address the question "What is there?" if nobody knows. For example, if there's a tiger in the room, your epistemology may not be cognizant of that fact -- you may not see it, o...

Re: make truth?

That's a common mistake: the mistaking of epistemology for ontology. And I am certainly not making such a mistake. All "ontologies" are epistemic artefacts. You don't know what the shape of the earth is, maybe. That doesn't imply, though, that the earth has no shape. All it means is that you don't ...

Abstract thinking is precisely what I am doing.

The meaning of those symbols "10" and "2" is entirely abstract.

Re: make truth?

When 100% of the world believed the world was flat, was the world flat? Just about everybody operating at the every-day human scale still safely assumes the world is flat. But they're wrong. And we know they're wrong. They were always wrong. So, as you say, When 100% of the world believed the world...

This is simply you appealing to normative semantics. There's no such thing.

What's the "normal language use" of "understand"? How does "understanding" obtain?

Re: Computers Are Incapable Of Creatively Writing Music

It's not that it would be a(n external) simulation. Under your view you have ZERO grounds for saying ANYTHING is external to you. Simulation or not. You can draw any arbitrary line and call anything on the other side of it "external". That's how all distinctions/categorisation/classification works ...

Re: Controllers, Meddlers and Individualists

Individualists? You mean the "I never learned to think further than my nose" crowd? Individualists see the whole as nothing more than the sum of its parts. All human communication contains an aspect of meddling and control. Your wife meddles/controls you. Your kids meddle/control you. Your friends. ...

SteveKlinko wrote: Mon May 03, 2021 5:59 pm Be serious, in Binary 10 = 2.
I am serious. There is no "2" in binary.

So if 10 = 2 then 5+5 = 2
And if 2 = 1 + 1 then 5+5 = 1 + 1

You are dealing with meaning, not equality and you don't even know what "=" means.

Re: The Human Brain Is Incapable Of Understanding Anything

In my view the question is moot because the "conscious mind" is identical to a subset of processes (not just neural activity) in brains. It could also be identical to other processes in other sorts of materials, but at present I'd say we have no good reason to believe this to be the case. So far it...
