Re: Is finding your own meaning in life self-contradictory or not?

Hi Atla, I hear what you are saying and it pains me that I don't have a better answer for you. I can only repeat what I have already said in a different way and I think I will spare everyone that. Ultimately I guess this simply means that you are human and doomed to tread the path(s) you see opening...

Re: Is finding your own meaning in life self-contradictory or not?

Hi Atla, I exercise a sort of denial, but in a rather unusual way. I view the world from two different perspectives all the time. I arrived at this method to get rid of most of the existential dread / emotional horrors. It doesn't fully work for meaning yet, but I think it will. Works well enough fo...

Re: Is finding your own meaning in life self-contradictory or not?

Hi Atla, [To those whose lives have been touched by the tragedy of suicide, you may wish to skip this post and any further of mine in this thread just in case.] Did I write what I wrote? My English teacher will be spinning in her grave. It was a choice between proof-reading my post or throwi...

Re: Is finding your own meaning in life self-contradictory or not?

Hi Atla. ...Isn't finding meaning in your life also meaningless, and so on a deeper level perfectly self-refuting? How do you make it not self-refuting? Have you looked at The Myth of Sisyphus by Albert Camus? I haven't read it yet but it is on my reading list. The jist I think is that you have thre...

Re: falling in a vacuum container

Hi duszek, Because you ask the question, it makes me think you still don't quite grasp what is going on. Firstly, forget drag. There just isn't any. To extend the experiment a bit, consider the heavy object as being aboard the ISS. The ISS is accelerating towards the earth at about the same rate as ...

Hi Harbal,

Thanks, but I think I have a long way to go to match the number of laughs you have given me.

Re: falling in a vacuum container

Hi duszek, How would it look like for someone watching from outside ? The heavy object would pull the rip-cord and very little would happen. The drogue would just sit there. A short while later the heavy object would appear to open its mouth. But in a vacuum, no one can hear it scream. Probably the ...

Re: Has religion been a boon or a bane to mankind?

Not sure where the balance is on this point.

But is does make lurking in a philosophy forum a mite tedious.

Re: falling in a vacuum container

duszek wrote:Most people have seen the impressive experiment with a heavy object and a feather falling to the ground at exactly the same speed.

What would happen if we attached a little parachute to the heavy object ?
Hi duszek,

We would give it a false sense of security.

Until it pulled the rip-cord...

Re: Game Theory

Phew, I optimized the script and it now matches the given solution. Fortunately, with the given example, my solution was slower and the right answer could be given by either party. The quickest would have known on day 5 so would call it correctly. Got out of jail free that time. That will teach me t...

Re: Game Theory

Hi Arising, Keep going, you look like you are nearly there. I had similar sketches to you. If I can find some time I will optimize my script to see if it then matches the proposed solution. Clue (maybe :? ):- To be 100% sure of escape they must match and be seen (a priori) to be the only optimal sol...

Re: Game Theory

Hi, For this to be an honest puzzle there would have to be exactly one solution. Looking at the way I have done it I am missing why it is not a viable solution. If one person does it as you did it and one as I did it then things may get out of sync. The problem appears to be the possibility of simpl...

Re: Game Theory

Hi,

I got 13.

A split of 9 and 4

The preson seeing 9 would call at day 5.

I could be wrong and an off by one error is fatal in this game.

No more please, I am so far behind in my work and these don't help.

Re: Albert Einstein

Hi prothero, Kant was not a solipsist. My definition of a solipsist is someone who believes that the noumenal world is unknowable. I thought that Kant suggested that the noumenal world is unknowable. Ergo Kant is a solipsist. This apparent contradiction may be due to us having different meanings att...

Re: Albert Einstein

Hi Hobbes, ...I don't think matter is knowable at all. If this is the case then you cannot speak of it. Of course I can; in the same way I can talk about the largest prime number in that there isn't one, I can talk about squaring the circle in that you can't, I can talk about the completeness of mat...
