Re: Books are meaningless
Books are meaningless. Books only gain meaning if some one reads them. ETC ETC All things find meaning in the light of life.. How essential some thing is says how valuable it will be.. I have found books to have great meaning, and they gave me more than I ever put into them.. Look at how many lives...

Re: What could make morality objective?
There is a certain understanding in morality, and it defies reason.. Laws are attempts to make morals objective, but since the Decalogue we have had a loop hole for every law... The loop hole is as a direct result of the symbol-grounding problem. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Symbol_grounding_probl...

Re: A Modust Proposal
Death is unreasonable. So are morals.. Morals are reasonable for the species. Keeps everyone from killing everyone else. Your's is Kant's approach. Finding a reason for morals after the fact, or finding reason for them by imagining a world without them is not the reason to act morally in a demandin...

Re: What could make morality objective?
(Wiki) My problem is that consequences are open to questions of bad and good and so consequentialism too is subject to rules. All human affairs are in dire need of rules. It is the very rules that we need to negotiate. For example appealing against global warming is a purely consequentialist argume...

Re: A Modust Proposal
It is said, there are as many definitions of 'what is philosophy' as the number of people who attempted to define it. So there is probable millions or perhaps billions of definitions [explicit or implicit] of "what is philosophy" out there. As with the above, I believe you have a very con...

Re: A Modust Proposal
People who commit crime generally already know/feel what they're doing is wrong and when this isn't the case, in most Western countries, that's literally something so extreme that they can plead legal insanity. It's considered a mental impairment or a temporary state. I'm not saying there's no wigg...

Re: The Limits of Morality
The goal of philosophy is not to learn the form of philosophy as it is taught, but to learn what all forms have in common, and what each can teach us.. How do you envision what the form of philosophy is as it is taught? I daresay that's an unconventional way of looking at the subject matter. Whatev...

Re: A Modust Proposal
If youth is wasted on the young, philosophy is wasted on the old.. The time to teach it is when people can use it.. Anyone older who learns philosophy has already wound the mainspring of their lives and are set upon their course, and have wondered into it, and touched it in passing.. Philosophy sho...

Re: Making Children Moral
In the first part of our mini-series on moral education, Michael Hand considers whether schools should be involved in trying to make children moral. https://philosophynow.org/issues/127/Making_Children_Moral The problem is misstated .. All morality has an emotional basis which is a much as saying a...

If this wasn't a philosophy forum I would be sure I was getting trolled but I've met enough people here who have such insane ideas that I believe you actually think you're in the right here. I've had enough. Good day. Yep, lots of trolls about and not enough goats! I don't know if I necessarily agr...

Re: What could make morality objective?
You can define the natures of purpose bred animals and truly wild animals. Humans are different as humans are neither purpose bred nor wild but are artificial products of cultures. Sure we are complex beasts, but statistical clusters/patterns emerge with such large sample sizes and therefore - so d...

Re: What could make morality objective?
The only thing that would make morality objective is to have it as an object.. Since morality is a spiritual subject, consider: Morale as opposed to Physic, then it can never be seen as an object.. The world is divided between physical forms of which we can say we have knowledge, and moral forms of ...
