Proof-Read Exchange For Essays/Pieces

Hi there guys!

I have recently written an essay, I was wondering if anyone would be willing to give it a proof-read, perhaps with some criticism? I'd love to do the same in return for anyone else.

If interested, the essay is on Sartrean concepts of freedom and choice.

Thanks,

Re: You have no image of yourself.

I tried to read Sartre's ''Being and Nothingness'' book...it was a present to me from my Brother. Had to put it down, since I found it to be too deep, in fact I couldn't make head nor tail of what he was talking about, no matter how many times I tried to. . Admittedly, I haven't read it all - time ...

Ihoardpoetry wrote: Though I don't think the comparison between Sartrean conceptions of freedom and the fall necessarily fit. In fact, I'd say minimally so because Sartrean conceptions of freedom begin from an atheistic premise: that objects, which have a predetermined functionality - i.e. a knife ...

Re: You have no image of yourself.

Ihoardpoetry wrote: Of course, this radical freedom arises from the ability to separate - or, as Sartre calls it, nihilate - since we can always reject any current influence (facticity about ourselves, such as past events) on our behaviour and radically choose something for ourselves. Nothing const...

Re: Hello!

I hear you, IHeardPoetry, on all fronts. I am a fan of long sentences. I'd rather read and write a bunch of run-in sentences than get through the hacking cough-like style of Hemingway-like writers. Hemingway, being American and a Nobel-prize winner, had enough clout to poison the writing of North A...

There were a number of songs in the sixties about the colour yellow: The Call Me Mellow Yellow, by Donovan, Yellow Submarine by the Beatles, Yellow is the colour of my girlfriend's dress, (line from a song), Yell, oh, yell truth into the world! Re: You have no image of yourself.

Ihoardpoetry wrote: Yeah that's interesting. I think this again relates to Sartrean nothingness: we are aware that our awareness is not the object, we see ourselves as something entirely distinct from the object: in being able to isolate an object as "That is a tree" it is implicit that w...

Re: You have no image of yourself.

I find this super interesting - perhaps there are even links to be made to Sartean conceptions of Nothingness and how this allows us to separate ourselves from other things: we recognise what we are because we recognise what we are not; as such, when viewing a chair I am explicitly aware of the cha...

Re: Hello!

Don't listen to Peter Singer! He's full of shit. Yeah, interestingly I found his work dissatisfying, but I'm not sure to what extent that was because I had already made the lifestyle choice to become vegetarian, and thus found his work unconvincing, and not as radical as I thought it could be. Addi...

Re: Valintines

I think perhaps love and loss are two sides of the same coin, each providing mean to the other. We can appreciate love much more in the awareness of loss (absence makes the heart grow fonder) and the reason we experience loss is precisely because we felt such love. Personally, I'd rather have loved...

Hi, continuing your welcoming, you will notice, IHordpoetry, that here we are divided into two bitterly antagonistic, die-hard fighting groups of atheists and religionists. The atheists are more-or-less united under the flagship of science, reason, healthy common sense and good looks, while the rel...

Introductory Reading List?

I am considering getting into aesthetics as it is one of my modules for next year (I'm studying BA Philosophy). I am looking for recommendations and suggestions for readings over the summer to prepare myself, whether that be introductory texts, study guides or individual texts of philosophers. Many...
