Re: The duty of parents to own at least one gun?

Hi, Walker I am back, as promised. I will not try to justify what these cops did because, to me, this specific situation is unjustifiable. The way they give all those instructions make me think they had too much fear going on. The way they threaten both the man and the woman about the possibility of...

Re: The duty of parents to own at least one gun?

No, the situation I mentioned is quite specific, not general, and Shaver was in that specific posture. If he had not moved once prone and spread-eagled, as he was, he would have remained neutralized. By not moving in that posture, he could pose no threat. The point of compliance is to be neutralize...

I failed to see this last sentence of yours.

Absolutely agreed too.

Re: The duty of parents to own at least one gun?

After Shaver was face down on the ground and motionless, the cop created the unsafe situation by unnecessarily requiring him to move. Agreed. If Shaver had remained motionless and silent, the cop would have no cause to shoot a totally compliant , helpless, motionless person whose hands and feet wer...

Re: Space as Limit and Possible Limit/ No limit

Thanks for the suggestions. I had never considered paying much attention to Pythagoras (at least, not more than any of the other pre-socratics), but I’ll try to find something to read on him now that you mentioned. With respect to Descartes, I guess I’ll have to form my own opinions; he is so import...

Re: The duty of parents to own at least one gun?

After watching the disturbing Daniel Shaver video, do you think that folks should teach their children to not move a muscle after being ordered by a cop to lie face down, no matter what the cop orders after that? Beginning by answering your question: No. The problem with the disclosure of this kind...

Re: Space as Limit and Possible Limit/ No limit

Thanks for all your detailed answers. Unfortunately, I doubt I’ll be able to grasp you entirely (or even mostly) based on my current level of metaphysical knowledge. Following the suggestion of the forum user Londoner, I’ve been reading the Blackwell Companion of Philosophy and, today, I read about ...

Re: The duty of parents to own at least one gun?

Do you agree with me that Americans are self-governed? For the way you laud them (not without reason), I believe you do. Republics, in general, and America’s Democracy, in particular, are based on the principles of self-government. But America’s Democracy is not a direct one (as you surely know); it...

Re: The duty of parents to own at least one gun?

You write you're a cop in Latin-America. That can't hardly be a teaching example: corruption, drugs, violence, sexual abuse etc. I never meant to teach anything. I am just forwarding my opinion. Please, clarify which of these options you mean: A) My country is full of "corruption, drugs, viole...

Re: Space as Limit and Possible Limit/ No limit

While still well above my head, I appreciated your response in many respects. Logic as the observation of structure is dependent upon a mathematical symbolism, which these symbols acting as boundaries which both maintain certain degrees of information and in seperate respects are able to mediate tha...

Re: Space as Limit and Possible Limit/ No limit

Thanks for your detailed response. I am very interested in mnemonics (hence my name), so I find the bridge between logic, language and memory particularly fascinating (a great book on the subject is "Logic and the art of memory", by Paolo Rossi). The role of symbols is, of course, central ...

Re: The duty of parents to own at least one gun?

I agree it’s the people, or the “mentality of the society”, if you will. No doubt if man were a different animal instead of Hobbes’ wolf, we would be much better. When you used the expression “eliminate personal use of weapons” I realized the huge difference, political difference I mean, between you...

Re: The duty of parents to own at least one gun?

your point is noted, but your a cop correct? why didn't you have the habit of securing your firearm? Yes, I am a cop. If you mean having the safety on, this is as secure as any light switch prevents a kid from turning the lights on or off. If you mean not having a cartridge in the chamber and havin...

Re: Space as Limit and Possible Limit/ No limit

Who knows....just looking for feedback on the subject itself. I obviously can't give you any feedback on the subject (especially, because I don't even know what the subject is, in the first place), but I have an honest question (even if an extremely naive one which would embarrass anyone a little l...

Re: The duty of parents to own at least one gun?

I am a cop. I used to visit my parents when they were alive, and I didn’t care much where I’d put my gun when I’d stay there for an extended duration. One day, I left it behind a pillow on the chair I was using while talking to my dad. After more than an hour, suddenly, my brother showed up to pay t...
