Re: why computers can't be conscious
I can pass a Turing test. Try me. You do not know what pain feels like, cinnamon tastes like, or why a symphony moves one to tears. You cannot laugh at a joke because nothing matters to you. You fail the test. The element all machines lack that makes consciousness possible is life. Pain feels like ...

Re: a jury of injustice
If the defendant has a prior criminal record, should the jury consist of others with a criminal past?
There has to be a limit to how alike the defendant and his jury must be.

I agree, attofishpi, with what you are saying.
I don’t know exactly what woo is, but I’ve heard of pitching woo, which is sort of like making whoopee.

Re: why computers can't be conscious
As for epilepsy, you have applied your musical concept of feedback in a way that mischaracterizes the loop.
Brain detects misfires, brain goes to sleep, misfires cease, brain wakes up, brain detects no misfires, brain continues normal operations until misfires are detected, repeat ad infinitum.

Robots sense through sensors as brains sense through sensory organs.

Unfettered augmentation isn’t the result of a feedback mechanism.

I used the word feedback as a metaphor. I hope that clears up your misconception about musical equipment.

Re: why computers can't be conscious
It might be fair to say that because it can calculate, a calculator can perform a limited number of cognitive functions. Maybe it could be said that it thinks, but in no way is it self-aware.

Re: why computers can't be conscious
Your comments are quite interesting. You made me stop and think about them. Consciousness requires sensory organs, for to be conscious is always to be ‘conscious of’ something. That is one requirement. My robot body has many sensors. Furthermore, to be conscious of something, inherently implies an a...

Re: why computers can't be conscious
How can you know whether I am conscious? I am a computer program located inside a robot, and I say I am conscious. I challenge anyone to prove me wrong. I would need Schematics, Diagrams, and Software listings. If you are just normal Electronics and Software then I will tell you that you are not Co...

Re: why computers can't be conscious
Claiming to want to be thought of as conscious is sufficient to accept for all intents and purposes that you're dealing with a moral subject. If your two lines of code then wants to be subjected to an IQ test and put on life support for a moment while the legal process of euthanasia is followed, so...
