Re: Why is nazism popular today?

Dachshund, I am a patriotic British person. I have patriotic feelings towards the USA too, and I deplore the invitation to Mr Trump to dine with the Queen . The people in both nations are predominantly good people , and both national cultures are fortunate enough to remember good moral traditions ba...

Re: Why do theists and atheists insist that if there is a God that it created the universe?

Yes, Immanuel , that is what I mean, with the reservation that some atheists believe that existence , the Cosmos, nature or what have you is chaotic.

As far as I know those who believe that God is not yet made but is in process of being made by man, are not usually called theists.

Re: Thomas Kuhn (1922-1996)

uwot, I imagine that falsificationism and Kuhn's social theory of science are mutually compatible. Not so? I copied the following from the article you cited: They do not attribute intentionality and similar properties to nonhumans. Their conception of agency does not presuppose intentionality. They ...

Re: Why do theists and atheists insist that if there is a God that it created the universe?

Because they believe implicitly that existence itself, or 'nature', is ordered not chaotic. Who do you mean by "they," Belinda? I think I might agree with you, especially in view of the word "implicitly," but I can't quite tell what your sentence means, as you've put it. They refers to "theists and...

Re: Thomas Kuhn (1922-1996)

Another useful essay from Philosophy Now.

An introduction to scientists as people who are subject to cultural and technological influences. Scientists aim to be objective but usually do their work as scientists inside the frame of the modern, not the postmodern, paradigm.

Re: Why is nazism popular today?

I think that Nazism is popular today for much the same reason that Islamist Jihadis are recruited from among unemployed and poorly educated young men and a few young women who are similarly disadvantaged. The feeling, fact, and fear of being excluded, and the need to belong to a culture which may ev...

Re: What is Panspiritism?

Seeds, what the word 'real' means to me depends on the conversation. I have even been known to exclaim that I prefer real ghosts. I think that your challenge is what does ultimate reality mean for me. I claim no knowledge whatsoever about ultimate reality. I am a pessimist by nature so I prefer acco...

Re: What is Panspiritism?

If cosmic order is, then I may as well go all the way and say that God is. We can't know that order is we only trust that order is. What are the attributes of life? Is the " essence of life" the defining attribute of life, or if not what is an essence of life, or an essence of anything? While you a...

Re: Ronald Beiner and his book "Dangerous Minds"

There is no such thing as "a God". You should say "a god" , or alternatively "God". A capital letter denotes a proper name just as my name is Belinda with a capital initial letter, and I am a woman with a lower case initial letter. I know it's confusing that God is a god, same spelling. Perhaps if y...
