Hi Derek,
I too like Peirce(although I don't claim to have a great understanding of his thoughts) but just to set the tone of this site, did he not call his thought Pragmaticism to differentiate it from Pragmatism? :)

I think that we place “Science” on too high a pedestal and thereby distort our comprehension of political and social problems. We cannot solve social and political problems like we solve the questions formed by the normal sciences. FINALLY!! Some common sense!! NO, we cannot solve social and politi...

Hi RA, If memory serves right then a good intro was once, What is This Thing Called Science? A.F. Chalmers. Moving on and to balance Kuhn, Karl Poppers "Conjectures & Refutations", a major work in Phil of Science due to his concept of falsification as the primary result of the scientif...

Re: Probabilistic theories and underdetermination

Hi Aetixintro,
I'd be very dubious about making laws of nature infallible given the problem with Induction.
You have not given me an example of this phenomena called a 'reflection of gravity'?

Thanks to you Jet, Looks a well useful book and I may well buy it. Funnily enough, judging by the sales blurb, what I don't understand is that you appear to understand it as an attack upon Technology. To me, so far, he has obviously taken advantage of what I'd call Appropriate Technology(as there's ...

Hi ibb, Thanks for the time. I get the idea that Energy can be described as the product of Heat and Work. Work being some harnessed measure of difference in Heat. I also think I get the idea of Entropy as being the possible Work lost due to the action of the harness in producing Work, i.e. Heat is l...

:) RA, Just goes to confirm what I've always believed, " "multitasking", the ability to do lots of things badly". Although I'm being harsh as I do understand "multitasking" as "the ability to rapidly change state". Something that many appear to interpret as &q...

Re: Probabilistic theories and underdetermination

Hi Aetixintro ...reflections of gravity and other phenomena we never doubt. Whats a reflection of gravity? With respect to the underdeterminism and probability I'd essay a no, as, as far as I was lead to understand, "underdeterminism" in Phil of Sci is(was?) the problem that the experiment...
