Re: Aleppo

Very disturbing what is going on in Aleppo. Also saw where the Russian Ambassador was shot yesterday. Not a good thing to kill an ambassador but it seems difficult to blame Muslims for being incensed over what is happening in Syria. When in distress, kill someone I guess. Personally I think Muslims...

Re: Does the center of a disk exist?

I guess it's just because we imagine the centre as inert, but the same 'motionless point' applies to any point within any shape we imagine to be inert. Because the point itself is 'sizeless', or at least, 'has no parts', there is no motion there when it's imagined to be inert. The center of a mathe...

'Employment' means paid to work, right?

Re: Questions about Descartes ''I think therefore I am''

I'm sure you're making up a big story about what 'I' implies. It seems to me to be a good simple way of referring to ourselves. What it refers to exactly is an interesting inquiry, none-the-less. Every utterance is a made-up story...it' an auditory illusion of sound appearing to nobody from nowhere...

Re: Questions about Descartes ''I think therefore I am''

It's just that you assert 'I' = 'separate me'. 'I' might refer to that which remains constant while experience continues to change. For example, people use 'I' to refer to themselves at age 10, and still use it at age 60, so it follows that 'I' refers to something is continuous as opposed to anythi...

Re: Questions about Descartes ''I think therefore I am''

That's what I think most people refer to as 'I' or 'myself'. Something that has no shape of itself, but is somehow shaped by self expression, self reflection or something like that. Descartes referred to it as 'each time it is expressed by me or conceived of in my mind.' He didn't describe what 'it...

Or even how to spell it.
I even used an apostrophe incorrectly in the same post! That's far, far worse.

Re: Questions about Descartes ''I think therefore I am''

The thread is at least presented as being about Descartes, but I came to suspect that was just a front after reading a few posts. Problem is everyone knows "Cogito ergo sum" but do not know it's more subtle meanings. Yes, there is the belief I am my name, my body, my conditioning, my mind...

Re: Rock and Roll

In a film with Inspector Barnaby the latter was enthusiastic about rock and roll music, he tried to play the guitar again, he did not suspect a rock and roll musician of a murder (but at the end he finally realized that it was exactly him who did it). I am puzzled by this enthusiasm, they are loud,...

Re: Questions about Descartes ''I think therefore I am''

I'm familiar with neti-neti and various non-duality speakers. Descartes process was precisely 'neti-neti': "I will suppose that the sky, the air, the earth, colors, figures, sounds, and all external things, are nothing better than the illusions of dreams, by means of which this being has laid ...

Re: Questions about Descartes ''I think therefore I am''

What do you refer to as 'I'? I is a thought...it's a thing. That in which things arise is not a thing. Therefore the thing is not really a thing, it's just thinking it is. No thing is doing this. Each thing is known in the instant it arises one with the knowing which is no thing. These two dynamics...

Re: Questions about Descartes ''I think therefore I am''

One of my experiences is a sense of continuity. There is 'me and experience', in that I do not identify myself with any particular experience. The 'me' is only ever awareness aware of the experience. An experience is known only by the awareness in which the experience is arising. The 'me' is the ex...
