Re: North West England

Time stands still in Holmfirth, VT, dates mean nothing there. Quite. Twelve years elsewhere is three minutes in Holmfirth. We're on Kantian time here and the Parish Council decides how fast it should run. Sid's cafe sound practical. I'll bring a date. I'm wondering if it's worth making an effort to...

Re: Why the Ramana Maharshi model for humanity is flawed.

For a doctrine of Unity all positive metaphysical theories are false. Metaphysical antinomies are constructed out of pairs of such theories, Their falsity would explain their logical absurdity. The correct theory would be neutral. Sure, no paradoxes or dilemmas arise as long as no one asks any ques...

Re: Why the Ramana Maharshi model for humanity is flawed.

In what way does the phrase “the Unity of All” offer anything towards resolving the mystery of reality? Good question. One thing it explains the failure in logic of all other theories. Thus it explains why metaphysical problems are undecidable. No other reasonable explanation is available or ever h...

If it's okay with you I'll just repeat my book recommendation. It's all there.

The philosophical fields of metaphysics and ontology are pretty-much total failures.
In the academic world they are, and I wish more people would recognise this. Then they might start wondering why.

Re: Why the Ramana Maharshi model for humanity is flawed.

That single truth is the Unity of All. Even sceptics can work out that all other ideas fail in metaphysics. Before you can work out anything of this sort first you have to define your criterion for "failure". A theory fails if it gives rise to contradictions. Almost everyone agrees that all positiv...

Re: The ontological error of Philosophy

I find your approach impossible to handle. If you think empirical science can address philosophical problems then you endorse scientism. I am finding it hard to understand how you've reasoned yourself into this position. Then perhaps you could look up 'scientism,' on Wiki. Are you saying that it is...

Re: Why the Ramana Maharshi model for humanity is flawed.

In which case, my only objection to the Perennial philosophy is that even though it makes what I believe is a logical assertion that all of the world’s religious traditions have a common origin, it offers absolutely nothing** towards resolving the mystery of what that shared origin actually is. I'm...

Re: The ontological error of Philosophy

Aha. A fan of scientism. This explains our disagreement. If you can't tell the difference between science and scientism - you would disagree. I find your approach impossible to handle. If you think empirical science can address philosophical problems then you endorse scientism. This is just the way...

You probably ought to throw the one away. Philosophy is the one I threw away, because science can address the problem of omniscience.

Re: Why the Ramana Maharshi model for humanity is flawed.

roydop thinks however that this world isn't fundamental reality, so humanity should just commit suicide, cease to exist. If Ramana too thought that this isn't fundamental reality, then he was simply delusional. But I doubt that that's what he meant. It's very definitely not what he meant. For the P...

Re: The ontological error of Philosophy

It's fascinating how many people are happy to state 'There is no ultimate truth' without having a clue as to whether this is the case. Is this doing philosophy? Or is it avoiding philosophy?
