Re: Metaphysics is Not 'Beyond Physics'

. You say our usual view of time doesn't make sense. I take this as implying that time as we usually think of it doesn't exist. So, how come our clocks stay synchronised at all? Well, I guess you have no easy answer or you would have given it already. Well, I gave my easy answer. I suggested that y...

Re: Metaphysics is Not 'Beyond Physics'

If metaphysics is simple explain to me the Law of Identity. Or the question in my other thread: If time doesn't exist, then what keeps two clocks, that have been properly synchronised at some point, synchronised over any period of time? EB For an answer to the first question I'd need to know how yo...

Re: Metaphysics is Not 'Beyond Physics'

As I understand it, Nāgārjuna's concept of śūnyatā is the same as the central concept that underpins most scientists' metaphysics. Reality is a totality. EB The Unity spoken of in the Perennial philosophy is as little known in physics as it in European philosophy. Heidegger blames the early Greeks ...

Re: Metaphysics is Not 'Beyond Physics'

I don't have the time to study the great work of philosophers and metaphysicians. My position is that if the guy can't explain anything in a few pages, it's not worth the effort reading him. Some guy summed it up for me: He has studied Hegel all his life. He only recently realised he hadn't quite u...

Re: Metaphysics is Not 'Beyond Physics'

Not quite. It's the semantic analysis of our notion of being: No bachelor is a married man, therefore, no married man is a bachelor. That sorts of things. Your expression "the study of what exists" makes metaphysics a kind of physics. To study what exists, you need to know something about it. Physi...

Re: Metaphysics is Not 'Beyond Physics'

Strictly speaking, metaphysics is about things you have no idea how you could possibly make sure whether they exist or not. The best example is infinity. And if you understand physics as about things you think you know how to make sure whether they exist or not, then metaphysics is indeed beyond ph...

Re: Metaphysics is Not 'Beyond Physics'

The article claims that metaphysics is not beyond physics, but where is the argument?

What would you call the study of questions that are beyond physics?

Metaphysics takes physics for granted and extrapolates from there, so it certainly cannot be called physics.

Harbal. Good to see some Yorkshire folk here.

Scott - and some CGers. I know what you mean about eyesight. It's an instrument best played from memory anyway. It's a wonderful companion as one sinks into decrepitude.

Time stands still in Holmfirth, VT, dates mean nothing there.
Quite. Twelve years elsewhere is three minutes in Holmfirth. We're on Kantian time here and the Parish Council decides how fast it should run.

Sid's cafe sound practical.

Re: Philosophy Now magazine Suggestions Box

The problem with philosophy is that there are barriers of faith, IQ, education, and psychology, the differentness of which can't be bridged or broken through, and therefore dialogue devolves very quickly to smelly shit. Getting over these barriers is what philosophy is for, and it's never going to ...

Re: Hello from Me

Good grief. This must be a philosophy site. Thanks for the welcome Bellinda and Scott, and -I- for reminding me of the impossibility of avoiding trouble on philosophy sites. In case there is any doubt West Yorkshire is in England, just north of France, and OAP stands for 'On Another Planet'. Scott- ...

I have a theory that thinking is consciousness constructing a relative form of existence. Subconsciously it's: "I know I exist when I'm thinking."
Yes, and when you're not. Your post suggests you're most of the way to the Perennial view of these things.

Hello from Me

Hello folks. I've been subscribing for a year but somehow missed the forum.

I'm an OAP from West Yorkshire who spent most of his time in and around the music biz but took up philosophy at age fifty and now writes about it.

I look forward to some interesting discussions.

As someone who believes in the greater good, I suggest shutting down this forum. Although I believe also in the lesser good, I concur. The theists are dissatisfied with the site. The non-theists are dissatisfied with it. Those who think logically and also those who do not think logically are dissat...
