Re: Atheist In A Foxhole

Excellent poem and appropriate! Love it when verse is inserted to declare further the meaning of the post. Wish it were done more often. Poetry can contain a great deal of philosophy and is certainly a close relative. From what I recall, philosophy was first rendered by poetry.

Re: Atheist In A Foxhole

At a more general level, the recognition that religion’s usefulness or even benefit has run its course, is precisely what Nietzsche referred to as the death of God. .... People's former belief has become obsolete and they are replacing God with something else. "We don't need a God centred reli...

Re: Do you need imagination to make art?

Or would forethought and imagination and training be required, roadmap to know where you want to get to? Absolutely, all qualities required by any skill and automatically contained in genius. If any of these essentials were missing the Sistine would have been one hell of mess...like most of modern ...

I can't see it by what's written here. In what way was he out of his mind?

Re: An update from CERN

According to physicists it's almost impossible but even if it did it would dematerialize almost immediately.

What's more worrisome for the planet are all the BH's existing in some people's brains especially the ones who have the power but continue to run on empty.

I think Ideas can be - depending on ability - not so much feelings and emotions, as least not concisely which would amount to an oxymoron.

Re: What is Art? and/or What is Beauty?

Sometimes, IMHO, philosophy's job is like masturbation with no release, and I'm unenthusiastic for it. Bertrand Russell cautioned against believing that philosophy could truly break new ground, and accepted its limitations, as I also do. Russell was one bright cookie, no question. It showed a lot o...

Re: What is Art? and/or What is Beauty?

I know it when I see/hear it. I wont be told what it is. That's how most people see it which makes the question somewhat superfluous. There is no other counterpoint to it except individual preference and what we denote as art is merely craft however pleasing or not. It's only a philosophy question ...

Look forward to catastrophe especially when you consider those in charge not being better than those in charge right now.

Re: What is Art? and/or What is Beauty?

That which requires a higher sensibility to acknowledge which I find especially true when Art is NOT aligned to beauty but forces a transcendence beyond that limitation...something seldom acknowledged or appreciated.

Re: Herder, Humboldt, Heidegger: Language As World-Disclosure

This post is so illogical, nonsensical and anti-historical one doesn't know where to begin. Statements like these only confirm that philosophy forums are nothing more than lavatories for public opinion where ONLY opinions count no matter how ignorant and facts be damned. This one is especially outst...

Re: Herder, Humboldt, Heidegger: Language As World-Disclosure

Since I haven't read this article you refer to I can't comment on what it says. However the Idea behind the view that English is a "transcendental" language eludes me. In what way is it transcendental? English as a dominant language came about for a number of reasons, democracy may have be...

Re: Simplicity as a Primary Condition of Nature and Evolution.

Any mathematical statement is only valid for the procedure of thought for which it is being used. From such statements we can make no inferences about the nature of reality because they apply only to the specific aspect of reality we are trying to model. That is true but by what logic or necessity ...
