Re: Philosophy of Mind
Hi Sappho, In my opinion, your theory looks like Property dualism . If it's not, could you explain the difference? This theory, I believe, has the ability to solve the mind-body problem and the problem of qualia. It solves the mind-body problem insofar as there is no longer a need to explain how som...

Re: Good introductory books in philosophy.
I have often recommended René Descartes's Discourse on the Method for the beginners. It's classic and relatively short to familiarize oneself with the "philosophical" writing style of e.g. Hume and Kant. http://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/author/44 Accordingly, seeing that our senses sometime...

Re: Questions for the friends of qualia.
1. Visualized triangles are not represented in the brain in the physical shape of a triangle. 2. Knowing what neurons are firing (when one visualizes a triangle) is not the same as knowing what a triangle is. 3. Therefore, there is knowledge that is not represented physically. 1 is pretty obvious. ...

Re: Questions for the friends of qualia.
I don't know if any of us here have the same definition of qualia. That's why I don't like it as a concept. Whatever definition you come across is so long and convoluted that it allows many interpretations, often conflicting. I think of it as 'phenomena' also. What, to you is the difference between...

Re: Questions for the friends of qualia.
Now that we have some subjects who have had before and after recognition experiences of the Jesus figure, I still would be interested in responses as to whether there is one quale here or two qualia. Are you asking for a definition of qualia? For this case the best form of definition is subjective ...

Re: "If P implies Q, and Q is false, then P is also false."
I think that applying formal logic to natural events is often incomplete in the sense that it leaves the axiomatic basis undefined, while applying it to another formal system (eg mathematics) has no problem because the latter uses same axioms. In this case the problem is the Law of Excluded Middle. ...

Re: What is truth?
CTT defines a binary truth function (true/false) which links a description to its object. Any description ("bearer of truth value"), not only a proposition; any object, not only a fact. The formed metastructure has two significant properties: the relation (truth) between description and ob...

That's right, by my free will I can add. But I don't move my feet consciously; they do their part in realising my free conscious decision. I'm totally responsible for my walking.raw_thought wrote:In your example, you consciously decided to go shopping.

Re: Consciousness and free will.
So you are saying that if a rock hits my head and I become unconscious, I am responsible for my twitching? That's due to external nerve stimulation, like pain or other sensory stimuli. If you unconsciously seek becoming hit by a rock, then you are responsible. When we use concepts 'conscious' and '...

Re: Consciousness and free will.
I am not responsible for unconscious decisions. Yes you are, they are your decisions. Free will is not of unconscious "decisions" which you need in everyday life; it is of future scenarios which unconscious immediate acts only implement. When you have decided to go shopping you don't need...

Re: Consciousness and free will.
If the thought is formulated before one is conscious of it, it follows that consciousness cannot determine what one thinks. Only formulated thoughts are conscious; consciousness doesn't determine anything, it gives thoughts their phenomenal (=conscious) form. It's you who think, consciousness repre...
