Re: What is philosophy?

No time like the present. So, what is "the ACTUAL 'data'"? Well that will all depend on what 'you' and 'I' agree with and accept. Do 'you' agree with and accept that red-shifted objects are moving away from us is actual data? No. The red-shift is the data; any explanation for that data, s...

Re: Thomas Kuhn (1922-1996)

I wasn't meaning you personally. Nothing wrong with opinions. One of Philosophy's greatest achivements is offering methods for knowing what questions make sense; how to ask questions; what the answers might mean; what is it like to ask them; ". And without explicit foundations and logic, these...

Re: Thomas Kuhn (1922-1996)

Is this an objection, or just an observation? It is an observation. The practice of philosophy is little more than a parlour game. I do not think anything I said would engender that response, no. I wasn't meaning you personally.[/quote] Nothing wrong with opinions. One of Philosophy's greatest achi...

Re: Thomas Kuhn (1922-1996)

There are very few philosphical matters than have been totally abandoned. Whilst much has been refined, all the old arguments are still with us. Philosophy is not about solutions but about asking questions anf point out possible consequence. Science is about describing the universe in ever more det...

No. Philosophy does not progress. It is a system of and methods of asking questions. Once it concludes, it is dead.
Can you prove that? If not, have you considered the possibility that you might be operating from a less-than-optimum paradigm?
haha

When it works better and is consonant with other theories. That is the progress of science. And that is the progress of philosophy. No. Philosophy does not progress. How do you define a 'better way'?
When it works better and is consonant with other theories.
That is the progress of science.
And that is the progress of philosophy.

Re: How Good Do We Have To Be?

With so many serious problems in the world, Jean Kazez asks whether there’s any excuse to buy ourselves new toys, or even take up more worthy pastimes like playing the violin. Her reflections take in Paul Farmer, Peter Singer, Susan Wolf and Nietzsche. https://philosophynow.org/issues/58/How_Good_D...

Except that philosophy can have co-existing competing paradigms since it does not primarily relate the the physical world. Yes certainly philosophy can have many co-existing paradigms. But ultimately they have to have some correlation with the physical world lest they are pure fantasy. Yes but I wa...

Re: Tree of Knowledge

Rick wrote: "Let’s hope that taste doesn’t lead you astray!" I find this comment to be both bizarre and interesting. I mean perhaps it is you that has been led astray? How could you know that it is not? Could you prove it? It also opens up the question: "How can one determine whether ...

Re: Society, Slavery and Employment

<> THE INTERESTING conclusion from the above is that a ‘slave’ having guaranteed care during his life, may therefore be in a better position than the wage slave who may be cast aside into beggary when his labour is no longer required. And that is why some people have in the past, and perhaps still ...
