Scandals

Post by spike »

There are two very juicy scandals occurring at the moment that have great philosophical implications. One has to do with the News Of The World (NoW) and its phone-hacking activity. The other involves Dominique Srauss-Kahn (DSK) and his NYC sexcapade.

One commentator suggested that the NoW scandal should be thought of a kind of spring like the 'Arab spring' that is helping to liberate many people in the Arab world. Perhaps this scandal will erode the House of Murdoch and liberate British politics from his vast media influence.

Perhaps DSK will be found not guilty for raping a chambermaid in a New York City hotel room. However, in France, where he is considered an elite, his behavior has started a long awaited conversation about the relationships between women and men, where many men still behave like chauvinists. Sexual harassment against women in the work place is generally ignored and rarely prosecuted.

So here we have two men that have held extraordinary power and influence over others, who are now finding themselves and their empires under siege.

One good thing already from the DSK scandal is that he had to resign from his IMF leadership, a post that is now occupied by a woman, the first woman in such a position.
