Mad Men

Post by spike »

I have been reading "Mad Men and Philosophy: Nothing Is as It Seems", which captures and explains the advertising industry of the early 1960s. It gave me further insight into existentialism, explaining in one chapter that its primary values are authenticity and intensity. Existentialism is also about giving meaning to self and about having and making choices. Advertising certainly speaks to those endeavors.

Is that book the source of the TV show?

No. The book is the result of the show, a philosophical examination of the life style of the day, how it impacted the human condition and how it may have influenced our present.
