how a well-behaved OS/UI should act

Post by Advocate »

This is in applied ethics because we've caused untold suffering by not having this shit worked out a long goddamned time ago.

•never have to reload anything
•never have to save anything
•always be able to pick up exactly where you left off (external changes permitting)
•always be able to undo the previous ten actions
•always allow user priorities to override OS defaults
•skinnable
•always save last ten clipboard entries
•auto-update all indexes and shortcuts when a file moves
•auto-de-dupe
•default encryption
•compress all files automatically and in proportion to both expected and explicit access criteria
•semi-automatic layered redundancy and remote backup
•unwanted or unused UI elements become less obvious
•never have to verify anything unless it literally cannot be undone
•interface elements that produce radically different effects should always be buffered from each other
•maximinalism - UI elements should utilize the majority of the available area but not unnecessarily cover any background elements that may be relevant to the user
•universal plug and play that actually works
•meaningful universal help
•dedicated indexing and searching processor
