What is the meaning of life?

Still struggling with the emptiness; this vastness of this thing I will title, for now, as my soul.

Looking for the meaning of this life of ours.

I know meaning, REAL meaning can be based upon words but overall meaning, REAL philosophy, goes far beyond words.

I looked for meaning, REAL meaning, in experience. Over the last few months even that inner search that I have committed my life to, even that has fallen short.

I'm still empty. Lost.

Are we dead?

This thread sort of goes well with my current studies of Heidegger. Hiedegger's task, according to some accounts, was to try to overcome nihilism and what he saw as the contemporary sense of meaninglessness in existence by recovering a better sense of what it means to "be".

I've been reading up on H lately and am posting my thoughts in the "Book Club" forum where I've taken up a resolution for 2015 to read at least one chapter, essay or section of a scholarly book or article every day. In some strange sense, having this goal (of reading every day) seems to have given me a sense of direction and purpose just in learning new things or even refreshing my memory of past studies of philosophers. You are more than welcome to join me in my resolution yourself and read an "essay per day" and post your thoughts in the thread I started. Maybe it will lift your spirits a bit. :)

Maybe it's not repeat posting?

42.

And I think I know why. :)

But maybe it's not thinking that there is a 'the'?

That your 'soul' is empty means you've misunderstood what it means.
Looking for the meaning of this life of ours.
You should be looking for the meaning of this life of yours. Let me help, it's what you decide it is.
I know meaning, REAL meaning can be based upon words but overall meaning, REAL philosophy, goes far beyond words.
In Philosophy Now we understand that this 'REAL' is a myth.
I looked for meaning, REAL meaning, in experience. Over the last few months even that inner search that I have committed my life to, even that has fallen short.
That's because you keep looking for this 'REAL' meaning when its just meaning.

Ever thought that this 'inner search' has been failing you and maybe you should be looking outwards or how about reading some Philosophy to help you with your existential angst, try Sartre as he was much concerned with such stuff.
I'm still empty. Lost.
Try answering this, "What would not being empty or lost be to you?"
Are we dead?
No and you need to stop thinking in terms of 'we'.

I don't think anyone would argue with the fact that I'm the de facto leader of this wonderful group of stimulating online philosophers.

You may have a point, thedoc; but it might engender an admiration for his sense of irony.

Many years ago my older daughter was rehearsing for her part in a play "The Bald Soprano" and I was reading all the other parts so she could learn hers. It gave me some appreciation of the "Theatre of the Absurd".

It also helps me to bring some sense of class to this forum.

No, I think I have well earned the right to be the de facto leader of The PhilosophyNow Forums.

No one has added more valuable content to this forum over the past few years - certainly 2014.

I changed the scope of the forum. Over the years I introduced short posts, images & GIFs, and focused threads upon current topics & personal value of opinions.

...this forum used to be extremely stuffy.
Doing nothing but talking about old dead philosophies; old dead philosophers.

I added honesty.

You're welcome.

The irony is too much.

Told ya folks, NPD

More commonly known in the old days as megalomania.

You're only a leader if people follow, Poor Bill.

Only if 'de facto' is Latin for 'imaginary.'
