I definitely think there's something wrong with how liberals think about one of the most illiberal ideologies on the planet.

Many liberals, it seems, have been sucked in by over simplistic victim/colonizer narratives, and so brown = beautiful, colonized victim, and because most Muslims are brown, Islam cannot be problematic. When white people criticise Islam, that's just more colonial evil.

Obviously that's not a very nuanced view of the world - brown people aren't universal victims, so we should be free to really talk about Islam without the thought-killing accusation of "phobia".

Many liberals, perhaps most, are not pleased with that strain of liberalism which is only willing to see Islam as the religion of victimised brown folks - it's stifling to only think in such terms.
