Is AI the new Existentialism?

I believe it was in his lecture "What is existentialism?" that Sartre discussed how popular the terms related to existentialism became. The issue being that the lay-person's understanding of the term was not close to the philosophical understanding. Is artificial intelligence headed down the same path? The term is all over the place, but I'm not sure people know what it is. To be clear, I'm not sure myself.
