Pluto wrote:It was youtube that put it on following something else I was listening to - and I thought it sounded good. The visuals are not so good - a bit pretentious - but the guitar riff I like - and repeat is good yes - I also like the 'loop' in video - the beat is a bit like walking or marching, and the end is good because it's so final and abrupt.
Thanks Pluto. I was more focused on the music than the video and didn't notice the latter. The riff was okay but I usually prefer lots of variation in my music. Come to think of it, there's no hypnotic music at all that I like.

Go Alfie! You had fun with the clip, didn't you? After all, you are even older than I am. Stylish guitar work. You need a drummer to make it come alive IMO, but I'm fatally biased :)

Come to think of it, probably not. I am still finding music I've not heard from the 90s and 00s, when I was doing other things and out of touch with the scenes.

I dislike the extreme compression applied to today's commercial tracks, I care little for most computer-generated music and I dislike the way economic rationalism has impacted on pop, the cynicism and worldliness of it all now. It's ever more about effect and display behaviour than authenticity - and external aims are much more superficial and common than authentic internal motivation.

To be fair, I probably have this negative view about the music of the young because ....

*cue the band*

(and apologies in advance to the late Michael Jackson)

... because I'm old, I'm old come on
You know I'm old, I'm old come on, you know
You know I'm old, I'm old come on, you know
And the whole world has to
Answer right now
Just to tell you once again
Who's old!

Okay, interesting Greta. So you're old - and from where you are the music sounds bad - this is something that is a kind of interesting cliché, if we can call it that - the old always say the music of the young is bad and the old are told - you are old, of course you think it bad.

But the old is a bridge over time - seeing back into childhood up until now spans decades of music and styles - so as a comparative feature, age and thus time can give the older person...

When my mum listened to the beatles my granddad said this is rubbish - look at their hair, etc. He was big on Bing Crosby. Today's music is owned by corporations and it is used to sell products like never before. Yet even this popular sometimes vacuous sound hits home (especially with the youth) with its temporality, its newness - of the time. There's something about music that is in-step or a beat-ahead of the time, which makes it very powerful - it interprets the time musically - through sound and so positions the time with you in it.

Dancing to acid house at the hacienda late 80s was a bit like this - we were dancing to music that defined (in a way) the time, modern technology was used to push music making - and we were dancing to it - this is why I also like music made on a computer. Nowadays the times are so fucked-up with war and death, etc - terror attacks the new norm - that music as yet can't match it - can't deal with it convincingly - like advertisements can't also - and so both revert to tried-and-tested formulas such as sex and desire, celebrity and pleasure. A lot of this music can be heard whilst shopping - and is almost, it seems - its job - to be a background to your purchase.

I have this Orwellian fantasy idea where modern humans are jerkily dancing along to machine music. Unlike musicians, the machines don't need to pee or rest or drink or tune up or socialise or even breathe. Instead they just drive the humans on and on relentlessly, never letting them rest for a moment. The dancers are then forced to take amphetamines and other stimulants in order to keep up.

Does that sound familiar? :)

Ha! My nephew likes that kind of music. I just find it irritating. When I was young I loved hard rock. It was exciting and stimulating. Now it feels like an assault to me.

During the Great Depression and WWII music became especially upbeat and optimistic. People had obviously had enough gloom and doom and were glad for the escape. I think, though, multimedia today makes for a more complete escape still as it engages more senses. So perhaps we can expect more uplifting and exciting fantasy style movies, especially with underlying political good guy/bad guy metaphorical referencing.

Meanwhile, this is the kind of music that takes me away today - Pat Metheny - Finding and Believing https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F9vfzPA95yM. Come to think of it, it's quite hypnotic lol

All music was new and much was unaccepted at that time, but most came to be regarded as the good old stuff.

Well I see where you're going but the machine as yet (at least the music making machine) has no agency. Without help from a human dj - so I would see it as humans using machines to make music and dance to.

Kite - True Colours
https://www.youtube.com/embed/pewsPv9MTdw

Text (not insanely good, but works to this and that context):

we got a situation
where your presence tears me apart
it's not that i don't want to see you

oh god i do

if i could take it easy
and let passion back in my heart
if i could stop comparing to you
but i still do

don't mention love
my true colours
don't talk about it
i still think of us

we got a situation
when i see you its making me sad
i wish i could be fun around you
oh lord i do

for some it takes a minute
to open up and let someone in
for some it's once in a lifetime
and i've had mine

don't mention love
my true colours
don't talk about it
i still think of us

i couldn't see the ending come i guess
yeah i just kept dreaming
and now i'm useless

don't mention love
my true colours
don't talk about it
i still think of us

Piano by a computer techno guy with the birds in the background. Maybe it goes nowhere in particular but it is a good effort somehow.

I stumbled across this most excellent track and video and thought it far too good not to share.
