Can you give a couple of examples of a "crude sexual advance?"

I think vegetarian was referring to arising's concern. To me the 'kind' of abuse she's perceiving is like this:

"Hi."

Would a wolf whistle be classified as a crude sexual advance or as a sexual assault?

It was Arising's comment.

I quite believe this. My wife's niece is a young professional woman who lives in Melbourne. She's a very attractive young woman in her late twenties and she tells me she has been fighting off unwanted approaches by feral men since her high school days. She and I have always got on very well indeed and I don't for a single moment believe that she is either lying to me or exaggerating the case because there are plenty more young women around who would tell the same story and who have no particular axe to grind. No doubt there are lies and exaggerations amongst many such stories but that doesn't mean this isn't a very real problem which needs to be addressed.

Fair point and I maybe should have used unsolicited sexual advances rather than crude but she does report what I would call crude advances, along the line of 'hey baby wanna fuck' stylee, with abuse and insult added when rebuffed.

So your view is that if the male is good-looking then the women would not perceive it as an unwarranted sexual advance? That doesn't appear to be my daughters position, her's is that she should be allowed to proceed in her public business without being bothered by strangers in an impolite way no matter what they look like.

 'Petite' her mother might be but it's not the size of the dog in a fight and she has inherited enough to protect herself as best she can in a world where she is, by and large, the physically weaker sex. What she has learnt from us and from being a Londoner is to be aware and try to spot real trouble before it comes but if it does how to deal with it. My advice to her? If it gets serious run every time, don't shout 'Help!' but 'Fire!' and try to chuck a 'rock' through the nearest house's window, if truly fucked, push your finger to the second-knuckle through their eyeballs, aim for ears, eyes, balls and bite, gouge, rake, tear, not hit.
Perhaps if you had thought of selecting a large strong woman who may be able to pass on traits that made your daughter tough enough physically, she'd have no problem.
By-and-large I don't have a few thousand years to wait for such an outcome.
You won't be able to change things so easily now with respect to your daughter's vulnerable genetics, but perhaps you might encourage her to favor a man who might be as meek and petite (I'm doubtful) so she could pass on the genes that might make her male children less aggressive?
Personally I think this genetics thing much overrated and prefer socialisation. So I'll let her choose who she likes thanks but thanks to the modern world there are much simpler solutions and as such I've brought her a tazer for the more serious moments that may occur.

"...would you believe you kids if they told you they'd be abused or assaulted?"

If my nine year old told me such a thing, I'd believe him...but I'm biased in favor of him. The courts, and the supporting machinery of the courts, when it's all working right, is blind to sentiment and slants neither to the molehill or the mountain.

My 40% assessment is admittedly anecdotal, but it rests on certain (local) facts and my own considerable experience (which I tend to trust more than that of those with obvious agendas).

Agreed.

Yes, people do more often treat others with an unbalanced (hypocritical) treatment based on whether they find them attractive or not. I gave the contrasting pictures above to demonstrate this. My point is that for that guy there, I'd imagine he gets treated with even more violation and disrespect than the angelic innocent girl in the other regardless. And yet society only feels sorry for the doe-eyes girl but ignores what really is going on.

The very fact that you stepped in to defend your daughter this way only adds force to this as I'm betting if it was a son instead you'd leave him to his own to figure things out.

I don't believe anyone deserves abuse. But I'm guessing that you don't perceive the words I placed in the girl's mouth in the picture ("Oooowe, how dare you think you have a right to even 'look' at me!") act as equally violent behavior as a punch to ones face. And this is what you miss.

I'm adding another element to this thread, age.

There was a big fuss a few years ago when a guy kissed a girl. The fuss wasn't from the participants, rather it came from the girl's parents as the girl (and guy) were in kindergarten at the time (this led to the guy being suspended).

For the boy, he was doing what comes natural for guys in expressing his fondness for the girl (a side issue is does the "punishment fit the crime?") And for the girl who was a willing participant, no punishment (but I'm sure her parents must have lectured her). So I'm saying that society needs an adjustment.

I'm doing an internet check. As I said it's been a few years.

I doubt that 'society' only feels sorry for the girl but I'm interested in what you mean by 'what's really going on'?
The very fact that you stepped in to defend your daughter this way only adds force to this as I'm betting if it was a son instead you'd leave him to his own to figure things out.
Then you'd be wrong, I pretty much give him he same advice but it differs slightly as he's less likely to face sexual harassment as well as violence. Although he's a good-looking boy and looks much older than he his and he also has suffered unwanted attention from older women and like my daughter finds it offensive and uncomfortable. Also, I did not step in to defend my daughter but just gave her experience of life in the big-smoke.
I don't believe anyone deserves abuse. But I'm guessing that you don't perceive the words I placed in the girl's mouth in the picture ("Oooowe, how dare you think you have a right to even 'look' at me!") act as equally violent behavior as a punch to ones face. And this is what you miss.
You've obviously not been punched in the face but ironically enough appear to support the view that psychological abuse is violence so supporting a viewpoint that you also appear to wish to decry?

You mean American society as I think such a thing extremely unlikely to happen here or in Europe.
