It averages out - eventually.

Re: What Was Your Motivation to Have Children?
Well, poor Bill; I get backache from time to time and the occasional hangover, but the idea that my woes are equal to what everybody who has ever suffered anything is bollocks with extra bollocks. I suppose I could wring my hands and feel guilty that I have been so lucky, but what sort of auto flagellating, self pitying loser does that?Bill Wiltrack wrote:

Your journey isn't over yet. Perhaps your occasional backache and hangover will be inconsequential in the face of the suffering in store for you in the future. I hope not.
Still, none of us know our fate.
Suffering is equal to us all. All of us suffer in some way...and there is no way to avoid this.
...still, why bring a being into this life? Into suffering.
Hubris? Unmitigated gall? Just not giving a fuck?

Forgotten the Buddha already?Bill Wiltrack wrote:...

Because if it is then there is no reason not to....still, why bring a being into this life? Into suffering.
Because you love your female and wish to make her happy?Hubris? Unmitigated gall? Just not giving a fuck?[/size]
Re: What Was Your Motivation to Have Children?
The Buddha said suffering is inherent to existence. Very different to "Life is suffering" nonsense.
My energy and libido decided I'd have children. Not even God could have stopped it happening. What else was there to do? Become a monk? F that!
Of course, we are a farmed species anyway and have little choice in the matter: our predators needs lots of us to survive

I am touched by your solicitude, Poor Bill, but if your thesis is correct, it is wasted as much wailing and gnashing of teeth is surely headed my way.

If you are right, Poor Bill, I do now and it won't be much fun.
Bill Wiltrack wrote:Suffering is equal to us all.
This is so manifestly untrue it is absurd.
Bill Wiltrack wrote:All of us suffer in some way...and there is no way to avoid this.
It's all in your head, Poor Bill. Stop feeling sorry for yourself and make the most of it.
Bill Wiltrack wrote:...still, why bring a being into this life? Into suffering.
Life is only genuine suffering for a small number of unfortunate people. Among them are those afflicted with despondency and self pity, such as yourself, Poor Bill.
Having children took a bit of effort in our case, as it happens. You can call it hubris or unmitigated gall and if ever I am in a situation where your opinion is of any consequence, I shall try and give a fuck. I have a different outlook to you; perhaps I am deluded, but to me life, the universe and everything is an extraordinary trip. It's not without its trials and pain , but I suspected that sharing the experience with my own children would be the most life enhancing opportunity. Turns out I was right. Life is not all fun and games, but given that the alternative is an eternity of oblivion, it's a really good deal that only a fool would waste by moaning the whole time.Bill Wiltrack wrote:Hubris? Of all the responses, no one has questioned themselves.
Yes you bring life but in doing so you also bring death.
There is no glory in that.
We have no answer to why we are here.
...sounds like no one else had another good idea so they just fucked. I guess, fuck it is your call to arms...

Not true, Poor Bill:

Well, Poor Bill, the choice is dead for ever and ever and ever, or not dead for three score and ten; take it or leave it.
Bill Wiltrack wrote:There is no glory in that.
You know what? I think of my children and think yes there is.
Bill Wiltrack wrote:We have no answer to why we are here.
It is unlikely to be for personal glory.
If you ignore what people say, you can believe anything you wish about them, but it does make asking questions pointless.Bill Wiltrack wrote:...sounds like no one else had another good idea so they just fucked. I guess, fuck it is your call to arms...

Since you have ignored what other people have said, what is it that sounds like the above?Bill Wiltrack wrote:As I said...sounds like no one else had another good idea so they just fucked. I guess, fuck it is your call to arms...

Heard you the first time. Wanted to give you a chance to actually think about your original response. Didn't want to hold you to it.
I hear, accept, and understand your response.
