Has Your Life Been Worth It?

Should you think about your duty, or about the consequences of your actions? Or should you concentrate on becoming a good person?

I have to admit, I just momentarily froze.

But that's why I exist. There is no "why" in the sense you're presumably looking for.

There's nothing deeper or more profound or anything like that with what you'd rather focus on. Rather, it just underscores that you've gotten this far while still believing some things that are completely untenable.

No. I would argue that you are woefully misdirected upon this very important question...and you insistence is just making you look more locked-into formatory thinking.

Respectfully, you were brought into existence because two individuals has sex.

Why do you exist? Why have you existed? Is more of a self-reflective query into the nature of an individual.

You may argue that this is a matter of semantics but again, if we are communicating upon a philosophy forum - I'm not looking for an obvious elementary scientific response.

Think you should have followed the other poster who was allowing you a face-saving out by stating that you were actually making a joke.

I will reinstate that out for you in this thread. May want to pursue this line of thought in the other active threads that you are currently on...

I'm the one who suggested that Bill keep a sense of humor (seems like a good reminder all-around)... but I ALSO can see Terrapin's viewpoint! There is NO answer to "WHY" in the question "Why did you exist?" I mean, who the hell knows? We don't know. We can guess. But there is no ultimate answer... and saying "because my parents had sex" is PERFECTLY REASONABLE.

You can argue that, but you're wrong.

You should be looking for the response that captures what's really the case. That's the whole point of philosophy. It's just that philosophy uses a different methodology for this than the sciences.

We exist to have purpose, a reason to exist and if we have no true reason we have no true existence.
I once walked in circles, the further and faster I walked the greater the illusion of progress when none was present. It is only when I stopped and understood my circumstance that true progress was made without going anywhere.

Has my life been worth it?.
If every life is assumed to have an equivalent value or worth and we are all living here together on this planet then my worth must also be dependent on that of everyone else. I prefer the term purpose rather than worth because we could live a full and meaningful life far away from everyone else and no money need ever change hands and no comparisons made.
In effect it is a loaded question.

If you can't answer (and don't know yet) IN THE MOMENT, it seems rather meaningless that you think there will be something other than that.

Okay, then who cares what your answer is IN A YEAR... we may not even be here... and even if we are, you'll probably know nothing more than you know now, since you're evidently challenged to answer such a simple question even now. Duh!

I guess you imagine that your game represents some kind of significantly intelligent or meaningful answer. How nice for you.

And it's obvious tht you think that I'm saying this as a form of escapism. Let's analyze that.
You think that I'm not happy, or I'm "less happy than manypeople", and you feel, seeing how you post it, better with yourself trying to show that to me. Creepy isn't it? What about you, are you happier than me, and you need to show it in a forum to a stranger? That makes you feel good with yourself? Even if it were true, if I posted that because I was depressed, what would you want by posting it? It's obvious that your statement wouldn't help.
Nobody is happy or unhappy all the time.

What do you know about me? Do you know if I have cancer? Do you know if I lived in a country in war were I lost all the people I loved? Etc. Nah, all that matter is how you feel "now", cause that's obvoiusly what makes you answer this question, you look at the past, and you make estimations about it, you look at your goals... with the eye of this moment. But that's anoyingly stupid, I live now, do you get it? I don't care about looking at the past, and I generaly have goals to accomplish, that's what makes sense to me. So, has my life been worth it? Who cares? I'll answer when I finish my next goal... or I'll keep doing things, instead of stoping, start looking to the past, and look for "unhappier people" to say them that I'm "more whole than them".

You have better things to do, don't you?
