Religion and the USA State

Religion and the USA State
Speech by JFK Sept 12th 1960
"I believe in an America that is officially neither Catholic, Protestant nor Jewish - where no public official either requests or accepts instructions on public policy from the Pope, the National Council of Churches or any other ecclesiastical source - where no religious body seeks to impose its will directly or indirectly upon the general populace or the public acts of its officials - and where religious liberty is so indivisible that an act against one church is treated as an act against all."

Does this mean that private citizens may influence government according to their religious prejudices?
Can the population take notice of the Pope or Sharia Courts and the USA as a body remain neutral.
If all religions merely worship a deity, but do not have any social-political beliefs then it is a logical statement.
If all religions and the USA have the same social-political beliefs, it would be very unlikely but logical.
If the USA is merely real estate and an industrial economy with its citizens doing as they wish, while taking the consequences, and merely keeping the peace, it is logical: Perhaps President Trump agrees.
Or have I overlooked something logical.
