Gender Equality by Category and Person
Freedom and Equality, amongst other values in the same dimension, are not ends in themselves. It is the way they are used and related to other values that provide social end-values, as here are named Altruism through to Anarchism at the other extreme. There is no evident reason for these values to imply anything other than Gender Equality.
Male and female are however categories of people on a physical basis of some importance, and the ethical consequences of that relate to the function each sex has in society. The family and children central to this.
But where employment in general is the question, it is not the categories of people by sex that are involved. It is the individuals of each sex, and their abilities for social benefit that need to be considered. Candidates for a job that does not intrinsically need a particular sex, must therefore be treated equally. The candidate with the best qualifications, regardless of sex, taking the job.
There is a current proposal that Parliament be made 45 per cent female, by law or rule. This has the appearance of altruism, but merely assumes all male and female candidates are equal in expertise. Something that can only be determined individually and not by category.
