Applied Ethics Holistically
The right ethics can be applied to a problem only if the root of the question is addressed.
What we have country, as in others, is government or establishment that deals in immediacy, and popularity. And which measures society in commercial terms.
The order of precedence today in broad terms should be:
1 The natural environment
2 The human environment
3 Technological progress
4 GDP adequacy
As an illustration, it is facile to simply say we have a housing problem. Prior to that is the population problem. And prior to that is the environmental problem.
If there were no plants and animals in danger of extinction due to our activities, there would almost certainly be more space for nature. In that case human population might be under control, with all the social problems associated. There would consequently be less danger from global pollution and warming. We would be able to concentrate on progress in technology, to improve life for a stable population. In advanced countries more goods and an expanding GDP would be a folly.
But of course, the most sensible way to achieve any global stability is in cooperation, and from the grass roots upwards. The grass roots being the community and country, solving its own problems internally, and expecting others to do the same without imposing on each other.
As matters stand in this country, it is in a descending spiral of ruin.
