Beyond Cryogenics
Whether human being can be frozen and then brought back to life many years later is still debatable. It is a very expensive process open to few people. But the real ethical debate must go beyond that. Indeed it is almost an irrelevance.
The real debate will come when it is possible to eradicate, or remove the effects, of virtually all permanently harmful and life threatening diseases. And also to mitigate the effects of ageing, as in loss of ability to reproduce body cells endlessly and reliably. At which point we will have a theoretical possibility of human beings living until they are eventually killed by accident or other mischance.
If any substantial number of people seize on assumed human rights, and demand to be allowed to live indefinitely, then the outcome for population size and social conflict will be enormous. Especially if the human family is protected, and children continue to be born in any number.
Altruist democracy has an answer. Tyranny has several answers. Anarchism would close its eyes and leave it to individual 'right' or freedom.
This is an instance in which genuinely altruistic religion - or people who are religious although not altruistic, but believe in the immortal soul, would have the same answer as altruism. That is to say, they would have to renounce the technology and permit an easy death to rule. The only likely escape from this being vast colonisation of other planets - should it ever be possible. So as to ignore the moral dilemma in the usual way.
It would be useful if an estimate could be obtained of the possible global population that would result from death being limited to accident and crime. Giving rise to numerous generations living at one a time. There would presumably be a theoretical point of stability. But even then family size would need to be limited to replacement numbers.
