Epidemic of Sexual Aggression

Post by tbieter »

Here is a remarkable essay on the current epidemic in the U. S. It presents a Catholic theological perspective on the problem.

What other perspectives are plausible?

I am just floored by this resignation due to sexual harassment by a judge whose career I have followed:

Is it not significantly more plausible that there is not a new epidemic of sexual misbehaviour at all? After all many of the allegation go back decades. What there is an epidemic of is victims not putting up with it, being shamed into silence, or utterly disbelieved any more.

The fact that you are hearing more about a thing than you used to does not make it new. Otherwise racism and sex were both invented in the 1960s.

How ironic. Catholics offering a 'perspective' on sexual deviancy.

... It is time to bring to an end the decades of silence about this much-needed truth, beginning with responsible and conscientious parents who, further, can count on support and backup from Catholic educators, priests, and bishops.
  Just too funny, they should try cleaning their own house first.

It seems to me that most of the sexual aggression occurred a long time ago, before the abortion and contraception controversies of the 60s. The difference is that the violence was normalised, with some segments of society active telling men to "discipline" their wives.

Go back earlier again, when the church was entirely in control in deeply violent mediaeval times - the dark ages brought on humankind directly by religion. The times were so violent and dangerous that the sexualisation aspect would have been moot.

Ultimately, does it much matter in the long run whether one is killed via violence or sexual violence - you are just as dead either way.

As other have noted, churches need to get their own house in order before judging others, and then work back the betrayed trust, which may take about as long of good behaviour as the centuries when abuse was normalised within church subcultures.

What and using women as sex slaves in Bachhic orgies was better? What about the throwing women in the colloseum? Are women that continually criticize men not exerting a form of verbal aggression/violence?

I don't see much attraction in the gender wars. People are people.

Unless we are dedicated to building a world devoid of the opposite sex (or devoid of the same sex for the greedy and terminally ambitious!) then we need to accept the peccadilloes and foibles of the opposite sex.

Young men, only taking it that they are young tend to getting a pat on the back over their sexual exploits. We are as a society even directed by the passionate sexual route to lasting relationships. Sex would n`t even exist without the sexual gratification component, and the lusting after ever greater gratification, (and yes, having sex can become an addictive disease disorder), is compatible with violence. What could have been an active see the world close and loving friendship degrades to two sex junkies getting it off with each other, one of them violent in his bid.
