I have to leave now, so I wish you all the best.

'...died following and loving the life they chose.'
Killing people they've never met and being a mindless drone for politicians. How touching.

Ever thought about writing a death letter ?

If it's something you may want to revise later better not!marjoram_blues wrote: ↑Sun May 28, 2017 7:47 pmYeah, I know. It's enough to make you weep.vegetariantaxidermy wrote: ↑Sun May 28, 2017 7:45 pm '...died following and loving the life they chose.'

My understanding is that such death letters, from servicemen, were/are compulsory ?
Is that correct ?
Re: Death letters
Don't know if it was ever compulsory or why it should have been. Not everyone had families to whom one's last words were specifically assigned. Certainly making a Last Well was very much encouraged to which could be added any "existential" comments in case one was prematurely preempted.marjoram_blues wrote: ↑Sun May 28, 2017 9:00 pmIndeed.Dubious wrote: ↑Sun May 28, 2017 8:54 pmIf it's something you may want to revise later better not!marjoram_blues wrote: ↑Sun May 28, 2017 7:47 pm

It doesn't really make sense that death letters should be obligatory since by definition they consist of your final and most "personal" thoughts. Perhaps they are mandatory under certain conditions but can't tell what those would be.

Re: Death letters
I can't see why it would be compulsory either; perhaps some feel compelled to write a reflective and comforting letter to be sent home, before they are breathing their last. Or being exploded.Dubious wrote: ↑Sun May 28, 2017 9:21 pmDon't know if it was ever compulsory or why it should have been. I doubt anyone would tell their nearest and dearest of any doubts or fears...
So, perhaps any 'death letter' written by anyone, depends on their intention to harm or heal any significant other...
Not to be opened in the event of my death.
Re: Death letters
That's the real reason for death letters, the last and final words of truth so to speak upon expectation of imminent demise. We think very differently then we otherwise would even when writing a Will which is just one of life's formalities. But death letters are like summarizing final confessions; not all of them particularly comforting to those who will read the last remains of one's writing. The "not to be opened until my death" is to preempt a lot of emotion not least by the person who survived the ordeal.marjoram_blues wrote: ↑Mon May 29, 2017 8:44 am
