Most here will have a settled idea of which political party to vote for - and be able to say why. It could be the least bad option - or based on a sense of 'if it ain't broke'...
To help us either confirm or question our views, we are fed a menu of political broadcasts; party leaders' debates; the tearing apart of personalities... via biased media. Whoever wins, gets to proceed with a 5 year plan of economy, wealth and health. And more...

Pre-election, the same old sound-bites and rhetoric is drummed into us. Strategists brainwash. Hardly anybody questions this method.
Where are the philosophers?
What about televised debates where prominent philos analyse and object to politicians and their powerful armies. Philosophy bytes and posdcasts are available - but only heard by a few...

Pluto started a thread 'papers pervert people'. The Sun is said to have won the election for the Tories. Rather than complain about any perversion, why don't philos set up their own Public Papers to (P)reach to the people.
What value elite academic journals/conferences when they only reach the select few? Why not gatecrash 'em or trash 'em?

Philosophy is often accused of not being relevant. It can't even stand up for itself. No power to the people.
What current philosopher can you think of that makes any kind of impact, anywhere?
I'm looking at Raymond Tallis as an exciting prospect. What say you?

...In litigation between two equal parties, I have no objection to adversarial legal proceedings: after all, they are adversaries.
Between a large corporation and a single wronged employee, or a landlord and one tenant, even though they are adversaries, it doesn't work at all well because they are unequal. That's why they have class action suits. The biggest problem with those is that discovery is a long and difficult process (the more litigants, the more depositions and cross-checks, etc.) and sifting through such a mountain of information can take years - by which time, half the complainants will have died without compensation. This kind problem is harder to solve.... so I suggest preventing it, instead, with good government regulation and a good complaint board to deal with individual infractions as they happen...

...the best thing we can do is teach comparative religion, mythology and folklore in school, so that at least they become aware of the entire smorgasbord, rather than have to eat just the meatloaf and broccoli on their plate.

I am getting a little crotchety in my old age. Last month, I went to the DMV early so I did not have to stand in the long lines (I do that every 4 years but this time I did not need to as they have a better system in place now that hold your place in line via text...but I didn't know that unfortunately).

Anyway, when I got there, I guess alot of other people weren't aware of the system either because there was a long line wrapped around the parking lot! So as I walked to the end of the line, without my morning coffee, I saw a muscular young man preaching Jesus (at the top of his lungs) to the captive audience waiting for the place to open. As I passed him, I felt my flesh crawl (us sinners don't like being preached to, much less that early in the morn) but then I moved down the line and could barely hear him, so all was good.

But then, I saw him moving down my way, and as he got closer his message was ringing in my ears..."PORNOGRAPHY, LIARS, DRINKERS, DRUG USERS, REPENT OR GO TO HELL...' I decided to give him a warning as he approached (I am a lady after all) I shook my head 'no' and gestured for him to keep moving. But did he listen? Noooooooo.

"Well", I thought, "I gave him fair warning...now it's so on!" So he plants himself right in front of me, screaming at the top of his lungs....and you know me and my mexican/privileged white girl ire...I can be, well...a bit of a bitch...soooo.....the challenge was accepted!

So, at the top of my lungs, I yelled, "OH YEAH. WHAT DOES JESUS SAY ABOUT TYRANTS?" "IN JESUS NAME ...PLEASE BE QUIET!"

I kept that up until he moved down the line, until I could barely hear him anymore.

The reason I get there early (Or used to get there early) is because I would rather wait an hour than 4 hours. If you get there 30 min early, once the doors open there is usually only a 30 min wait. But after that it's a 4 hour wait with every line open. The DMV here is notorious for being stupid...lol. But now it's sooo much better. You can call in to get a 'place in line' They text you telling you what place you are in line and the approx wait time. When it gets close to your time they tell you to leave as you only have 20 min or so. Then you go there and wait a few min for your number to be called. Easy breezy.

I don't own a gun either....because I spook to easily. If I felt in danger...I know me...I would just keep shooting until the thing that was chasing me was dead....the problem is...I have tunnel vision and would shoot anything else that got in the way. I fear I would shoot an innocent bystander. I would rather die myself than to do that.

Once, on a camping trip (not a real one when you sleep on the ground and shit...one that is in nature but has electrical outlets...lol) I was sitting out doors and a cute little humming bird got in my peripheral line of vision. I jumped up and screamed cause I didn't know what was dive bombing me! I scared the poor thing away.

Everyone started to tease me, "Bang! Did you see it!" lol Like I would have shot the poor thing first and ask questions later! They were probably right!
