Is Platonic love the best kind of love?

For all things philosophical.

I very much, platonically, loved my cats and my mother, while I had them.

I love my cat

He is so small, even for a cat,
innocent, full of purr and love,
brave, honest, playful,
and so grateful
for the home he got.

There is not a one
deceitful bone in his hide,
he tells me exactly what’s on his mind,
he knows when I am sad,
and also when I am mad at him
for his little sins he can’t resist,
even though I told him so many times
please, leave my pencil alone,
this is my chair, desist!

I can pick him up by his scruff,
hang him upside down,
he knows it’s just human stuff
and the infinite trust
he honours me with
makes us the closest you can be with a friend
a real love you can never pretend.

(...he died of a blood clot in January. :( )

Nice poem, Ned. Sorry about your cat. It's a loss many don't understand. My boys were mostly white, with large black blotches, a breed I call Holstein Cats... One was a thirty pounder, the other twenty. Beautiful, sweet bundles of love and joy.

Thank you, Dalek.

I wrote this, just before the end:

My cat is ill

My cat is ill.
His recently bouncy body
now limp,
lying on the carpet,
unable to move...
...bright yellow eyes
now dull with pain,
fear, frustration,
not knowing if this is the end.
To the touch his fur is still soft, silky warm,
except for the ice-cold feet on the back,
dragging uselessly behind,
not carrying him
any longer.

I look at him
with so much pain
in my heart,
unable to tell him
that he may be dying…
…so young,
so soon,
so full of life
just yesterday.

It is a life,
I allowed
close to my heart,
to exchange with: love, affection,
recognizing each other's existence
and mutual need
for closeness, understanding,
for unconditional, unpretentious
interdependence.

Love of any life form
is as deep as you let it
penetrate beyond your defenses,
as vital as you dare to expose
your ephemeral, one-time existence
between your brief span
of not yet
and not any more,
that's what life is
that's it...
...all.

I don't know if Platonic love (or Fraternal love) is necessarily the best kind of love. I think that it is very important in that people share things with friends that they don't with anyone else.
