Hi all

Post by ncrbrts »

Hello established forum-ites and fellow noobs :D

I find myself here as a novice and accidental philosopher. I started asking questions to people who alleged to be well educated and professional and they chose to answer them by medicating me and labelling me "depressed". It is refreshing to find other people who have asked similar questions and are still asking them now. I have always asserted that it's not a psychiatrist I need - it's a philosopher. I am glad to have found so many in one place :)

Mainly interested in metaphysics, currently reading Schoppenhauer. Looking forward to participating in many interesting discussions.

Funny how no one would comment on how 'positive' other philosophers are, as though their bias doesn't count.

Yes, Schopenhauer is the grandfather of the modern school of pessimism, and well worth reading.

One 'p' - I realised my mistake after I posted. Spelling and grammar mistakes, especially on my part, are a great source of shame for me so I tend to avoid being wrong wherever possible ;) sometimes things slip through the net.

I am enjoying Schopenhauer's observations, however, I can't agree with his beliefs about women not being capable of great thought and are basically vessels for the next generation. I am aware of his poor relationship with his mother and, in my limited experience of psychiatry, a great importance is put on that original relationship, so this might go some way to explaining these views depending on whether or not you believe psychiatry to be a valid science (I have yet to make up my mind on this).

Isn't it a male name in Italy..?

Mind you, I'm not one for such fixed labels as gender lol

Yes it is, usually male, mostly in southern Italy. Sometimes female in the north.
