I wish Mr. Lewis would tell us which article's conclusion he found crazy because I don't find any of the articles worthy enough to finish.

There should be an article in this issue about why we need the tension between liberty and equality in our governance. It is something like the tension we have and need between science and philosophy. The tension is a creative one. It keeps society alive and awake. It is a creative tension that keeps us on our tones and reinvents us. It's a tension that keeps us from atrophying and ending up like communism did, in the dumpster.

I've heard of of civil liberties. However, I've never really heard of civil equalities. I'm thinking that's because civil societies fundamentally grow from liberty first rather than equality. The push for equality as first and foremost has generally ended in disaster, creating uncivil, incohesive societies like that under communism (Marxism), which was the greatest pusher of equality.

Under communism a society of incivility and incohesiveness emerged. For instance, under communism neighbours were made to spy on each other and thus grew mistrustful of each other. When a society lacks trust it can't meaningfully work as one or create the networks that enhance a civil, cohesive society, therefore becoming dysfunctional.

Those who came up with "Liberté, égalité, fraternité" got the order right. Liberty must come first. Liberty gives us the choice and self-enlightenment to be equal or at least aim for it. Fraternity joins and holds the other two together.

Liberty and equality? That's strange, I can't seem to locate either in the world at any point in history.

Me bemoaning? Not at all. No, I'm merely inquiring and asking questions.

Just when I thought we were getting along swimmingly, you have to go spoil it with such harshness. Mildly disappointed, here....

Okay, I lied.
