The point I was making, me old China, is that, so far, they depend on us using particular language patterns that they recognise. Maybe they will become so sophisticated that they can identify all regional, cultural, faddish meanings, but it's an interesting thought that language development may be constrained by our need to communicate with technology. Even so, I don't think they rely on the work of Russell/Whitehead, Wittgenstein, the logical positivists, Quine and so on, but that is much more your field and if you say otherwise, I am bound to agree.Arising_uk wrote:Well my phone for one and goggle for another and the iphone for a third. Could we please clean up our language, and switch to the epithet Old Dutch instead?

It's old cockney rhyming slang, 'China plate' - mate, which as is common got shortened to 'china', so 'me old china' - my old mate.Dalek Prime wrote:Could we please clean up our language, and switch to the epithet Old Dutch instead?

I'd heard it before, but didn't know the breakdown. Thanks Arising. I should take a peek around the net to learn a bit of rhyming slang.Arising_uk wrote:It's old cockney rhyming slang, 'China plate' - mate, which as is common got shortened to 'china', so 'me old china' - my old mate.Dalek Prime wrote:Could we please clean up our language, and switch to the epithet Old Dutch instead?

I used to love rhyming slang as a kid, and loved the fact that the Bonzos used it in one of their songs "Death Cab for Cutie", sadly i'm the only one I know that heard it. And has caused one or two arguments along the way.Arising_uk wrote:It's old cockney rhyming slang, 'China plate' - mate, which as is common got shortened to 'china', so 'me old china' - my old mate.Dalek Prime wrote:Could we please clean up our language, and switch to the epithet Old Dutch instead?

In the song Viv Stanshall sings;
"She left her East Side drum so drab". All those with an ear to the slang knows that 'drum', is drum-roll, hole. meaning her gaff.
But everyone I know seems to hear; "She left her East Side room so drab." which I find disappointing.

Jump dahn the apples,
(apples and pears - stairs)
leave your drum
(drum roll - hole - house)
and hav' it on your plates
(have it on your plates of meat - feet, i.e. take a walk)
dahn the frog
(Frog and toad - road)
, until you get to the smoke.
(The Smoke = London)
Git wifin the sahnd of Bow Bells
(Get within the sound of Bow Bells - that is the vicinity of Cockney land)
and ask any geezer.
(Inquire upon any local gentleman)

Just goes to show that in order for technology to understand us, we will have to speak its language.
