Hi all,

I thought people might be interested in HowTheLightGetsIn (http://www.howthelightgetsin.org), the world's first philosophy and music festival held at Hay-on-Wye (26th May-5th June).

This event brings together philosophers, writers, musicians, politicians, artists and commentators for ten days of rigorous debate, incisive solo talks, film screenings, live performance, and parties.

HowTheLightGetsIn has put paid to the idea that the public want dumbed down culture. With an unashamedly high-brow programme tackling the latest theories in everything from philosophy and art to science and politics, visitor numbers have been growing at a breakneck pace - tripling each year. The theme for this year's festival is "New Gods: Icons and Ideas in a Changed World." Are the great narratives that have built and sustained the West under threat? And, if so, what are the new gods that will replace them?

With a broad spectrum of speakers including Anthony O'Hear, Don Cupitt, AC Grayling, Yasmin Alibhai-Brown, Peter Hacker, Christopher Hamilton, Barry C Smith and more controversially Anjem Choudray, and a number of live music performances, it's going to be a really exciting event.

Please visit our site for more details - www.howthelightgetsin.org

Hope to see you there!

All the best,
HowTheLightGetsIn Festival Team

Very funny post. The thought of a philosophy festival with Barbara Brooks and Aexintro is too brilliant for words.

What I always wanted to know but was too shy to ask:

Why is this elk so green, with a swallen face and without horns ?
Has he eaten something bad ????

I might finally ask during the festival ...

The thought of a festival without Barbara Brooks, Aexintro, AND Rortabend does not even deserve the title of festival,

I've got two weekends free in June but I'm unavailable from July 15 through to September. Minimum appearance fee is £67 plus a packet of giant buttons. If Barbara Brooks is on the gin again I'm out.

Hi all,

There's definitely scope for partnership if anyone's interested in being involved with the festival next year. In the meantime, do come along this year to really get a feel for the project.

All the best,
HowTheLightGetsIn

Whoa...whoa....Don't skid in and skid out of here so fast, HowTheLightGetsIn Festival Team. We don't do that here at this site.

Here, if you spit something out, you stick around to defend it, back it up, and attack anyone who may be stupid enough to oppose you. HERE WE HAVE A TWO WAY DISCUSSION.

You have 148 philosophically related speakers at your festival this year. FANTASTIC!

I WOULD LIKE YOU TO INVITE EVERY ONE OF THEM HERE to the Philosophy Now web site. I'm serious. Bring them HERE.

As I mentioned before HowTheLightGetsIn Festival Team we are here ALL YEAR LONG!

OK...okay......on behalf of all the members at this site I appreciate any organization that would devote themselves to the most important work of bringing topical ideas forward within a philosophical light.

We get that.

As a matter of fact we do that EVERY DAY here.

It would be soooooooooooooooooooo easy for any one of your speakers to visit here, at our web site. I get the fact of communal gathering at the beautiful HowTheLightGetsIn site at the shores of the river Wye. I get that. Some of us cannot afford to visit the United Kingdom and even the members who live in the UK may not be able to afford the reasonable ticket prices because-well because we are actually philosophers...naturally, we are broke.

Your promo sites mentions that some speaker performers offer a debate. Where? Which ones? Why aren’t the actual debate events duly noted? Don't you know that debate is the heart of philosophy? Debate is the irremovable essence of philosophy. Debate is philosophy. We do that HERE, everyday at the Philosophy Now Forum web site.

HowTheLightGetsIn Festival Team said:

I say:

There's definitely scope for partnership if anyone's interested in being involved with the Philosophy Now Forum web site TODAY, TOMORROW, and ALL YEAR LONG!

Go-go have a beautiful time at the beautiful HowTheLightGetsIn park located alone the banks of the incredibly beautiful Wye River.

We will be here, the unsung heroes, grinding it out, EVERYDAY, doing our philosophy thing under the generous but flimsy umbrella graciously provided by the gods' underpaid angel, Rick Lewis.

The world's first philosophy and music festival
and you COMPLETELY shut out the world's largest, most legitimate philosophical web site?

Go-go have a good time. FUCK YOU very much. Fuck you and all of your one-way lectures held in the most beautiful settings on earth. I say FUCK YOU now because I know NONE of your philosophers will make even the simplest effort of a mouse-click to participate in a two-way discussion of their philosophical positions here, any day, at the Philosophy Now Forum web site.

All the best,
HowPhilosophyNowGotShutOut

Hi Bill,

I appreciate what you’re saying, but the point of the festival is that it provides a rare opportunity to get philosophy out of the academy (or rather the forum) and into people’s lives.

There are a number of talks by individual speakers, but the majority of the events over the 10 days will be debates – please note the link http://www.howthelightgetsin.org/2011-programme/philosophy-sessions/

We have in fact worked with Philosophy Now Magazine, and can only apologies that this actual Forum has been neglected in the process - having had such a large response, we would like to offer your members a 15% discount on ticket prices.

Simply enter the code Now at the checkout stage to redeem the discount.

Hope to see you there.

Thanks,
HowTheLightGetsIn

Wow, HowTheLightGetsIn I sincerely appreciate your revisiting this forum and maintaining your thread. Keeping a civil tongue in your head in your response makes me look even more like the asshole that I am.

Thank you and I apologize for being possibly over the top.

I hope that some one of our members here at the Philosophy Now Forum would take you up on your generous offer to attend this event and report back to the forum.

There is however, time for the HowTheLightGetsIn Festival Team to speak with Mr. Rick Lewis to offer him the ability to open-up the festival. I don't know that he would even be available at such a short notice, but I have the feeling he would appreciate the consideration...

I know your speakers are already in place but could you find SOMETHING to offer Rick?

I think he is important both in his staunch resolve in maintaining the Philosophy Now Magazine and in his
resoluteness in maintaining this Philosophy Now Forum as a labor of love, for unlike your speakers, Rick does not receive any monetary compensation from this site for now. He does it for the pure love of the dicipline of philosophical thought.

Again HowTheLightGetsIn, I have grown to respect you for responding to my rant in a civil manner, now I am asking you to go one step further. Would you allow Rick Lewis or one of our members here, for instance Arising_uk to be some sort of guest, or speaker at this important festival?

I AM having a bad day today
. Some of the best written work in my life has appeared on this forum and I know it is the same with other Philosophy Now Forum members. The feeling in the end, in my gut, is that I am hurt and disappointed that the Philosophy Now Forum was not even considered to be included within this event. We are that unimportant?

I wish my gut feeling was different but really NOT ONE of your 145 speakers has ever ventured into this den to express an opinion or philosophical insight. Where are they?

We have TWO SOLID WEEKS before this festival. HowTheLightGetsIn, why don't you get a few of your guest speakers to visit here and identify themselves. They can't be that busy. This forum could be a great skills sharpening session to tone-up before your debates.

Good luck to you in all you do and I sincerely hope that this HowTheLightGetsIn First Annual Festival is a HUGE success!

There's at least one PN columnist speaking at the festival.

You're obviously a man of good taste judging by your signature. One of the best Homer quotes ever. Right up there with 'Save me Jebus!'.
