Frustration
Frustration
I get extremely frustrated when watching a WWII documentary about some Naval action or battle, and the producers are constantly using the wrong footage to illustrate the action. Almost Every time there is a reference to a ship sinking they show the film of the HMS Barham blowing up or the SMS Szent István rolling over, even when that is not the subject of the film. The other most obvious error is the use of the wrong guns firing, they have even shown German guns to illustrate a Japanese BB firing. The German BB's never got out of the Atlantic and the Japanese BB's didn't get out of the Pacific during WWII.

Re: Frustration
There have been a new crop of video historians on YouTube that use self made visuals, be it static for designed off a program like Microsoft Paint (very simply yet artfully done) or still pics of their own choosing, and they focus more on emphatic story telling, and cross referencing stories with scholarly minutia, and even stopping to answer veiwer questions if the caliber is high enough. I've been gathering informtion for a introduction to the ancient world (all cultures, philosophies, economy, religions, armies and strategic doctrine) for a while, and have been impressed by some, and surprised when a few are doing exactly what I'm envisioning graphics wise.
I recommend looking around on YouTube. They are going in a completely different direction that the documentaries of the 20th century went in. Copyright limits a lot of what big time documentaries can pull off, as well as corporate standards. They just slap whatever representative image they can scratch together, will work for most viewers. Not the same as playing say, Total War and seeing stuff a bit off, but they try harder in the case of historic video games. I've been playing Rome II, noticed only way to beat it consistently is to use tactics at odds with the historical methods because the programming is unrealistic and that the programmers designed it for a tactical and not a strategic recreation, so stuff doesn't play out like say, how Onasander would expect a Army too act, but how generic computer programmers building units first, then campaign maps off historians specifications would accept.
Some channels I recommend
The Great War
Historia Civilis
Simple History
It's History
Technology Connections
CGP Grey
Today I found Out
That is what YouTube is advertising on my tablet right now for channels I've visited recently, a lot more exists, they just use a silly algorithm so don't display everything I've liked, and shove a bunch of junk in I don't want. You'll find in general, it is starting to move away from video in documentaries, like battlefield footage, and moving more into custom graphics. A mix still exists, but it becoming more abstract as it offers better storytelling and control, more seamless fit between visuals and storytelling. The Great War does a amazing job at narration, simple set, a old WW1 looking seat, book shelf.... I'm failing horribly to pull it off in tests, my set up currently sucks. I want it to look more professional like it does, and have a equal force of personality. I'm just not pulling it off in terms of gravitas on camera. Might just go and rent a storage space, build a fake set, and practice singing Aqua's Barbie Girl in front of a camera until it looks like I really mean it, can really show it matters to me. If I can convince myself I'm worth watching, whatever the content, then if I have good content, I should find I'm good at delivering it.

I'm a Barbie girl, in a Barbie worlddddd, this is Nero's world, and Rome and burning downnnnn, he can build a colossal statue, can be seen from anywhere.....
Gonna take me a while. I keep studying methods. Hard to preform when you've gotten used to not having to.

Re: Frustration
He doesn't exactly qualify as the classical example of a political machine. Might after a few election cycles though. What the democrats did to Bernie Sanders does qualify be default as a political machine controlling the vote, old party members using inside influence to control the message. Trump is too fresh on the scene, with too much vocal opposition, nobody has difficulty in raising issues and spreading dissent. Now if it gets to the point that only a handful of top level trump supporters are ruling the show, and nobody seems to be able to push new ideas into the mix, without approval, then you know a machine has taken root once again. I personally hate political parties for exactly this reason, and steer clear of them, they tend to be treasonous to democracy in the long run. Was the view of John Adams, our second president in the states.

No, but he does seem hell bent on replacing certain facts with "alternative facts."EchoesOfTheHorizon wrote: ↑Fri Oct 27, 2017 8:34 pm He doesn't exactly qualify as the classical example of a political machine.

No. A machine has a soul.

Re: Frustration
Sorry. This was a reference to an old Police (musical group) album: "Ghost In The Machine". You are welcome to read between the lines this time. My apologies if I appear fickle.
Re: Frustration
Not a problem, there was also an animated movie by that title, and I got your implication that Trump has no soul. BTW you don't appear especially fickle.

Re: Frustration
Last evening I watched a "Battlefield" episode the Battle for the Atlantic and during one segment they were talking about the Corvette as an effective ant-submarine weapon but they were showing clips of many other types of escort ships along with a few clips of Corvettes. I'm surprised someone didn't stick in a clip of the car.

Re: Frustration
Lots of documentaries are just bullshit, the goal of a documentary is to entertain the masses. Like one documentary tried to "prove" people were the descendants of Ghengis Khan, by using shoddy science.
