Do you like to watch Doctor Who?

Post by Philosophy Explorer »

I never got into it myself. Maybe it's the look and dialogue and maybe I can't relate to the performers. Clearly though it's one of the most popular sci-fi series of all time.

What are your impressions of this series?

Some years ago I binged on the last four or five doctors. Wonderful. I highly recommend it if you have the time.

I used to watch it when I was about seven years old.

This from someone who doesn't appreciate television.

This isn't Who, but it is TV.

Harbal, here's American humor for kids.

I bet you like it.

But you've just given me two reasons why I won't.

During the 80's the local PBS station was broadcasting the original series and I was able to watch starting with "Robot" with Tom Baker. After the series finished they started again and I was able to watch from the beginning. I tended to concentrate on the story and didn't pay as much attention to the sets or production values, which some people would complain about, as if they weren't paying much attention to the story.

No matter what the subject of the thread is, doc, you always find a way to make it boring.

I watched season 10, episode 5 'Knock, knock' t'other night.
I enjoy the quick philosophical quirkiness amidst complete chaos.

Like:

Harry: I'm scared.
The Doctor: Don't be.

Harry: Why ?
The Doctor: It doesn't help.

Always liked the show. My favourite series was probably Seeds of Doom - where vegetable matter takes revenge on animals and, obviously, any episode where Daleks are involved.

Here's my old band playing a cover of the Dr Who theme last year (I'm on percussion tucked away at the back as I'd left the group two years earlier and was just guesting for the night) - https://youtu.be/Y4uFBnQ9Oys?list=FLeZP ... RpiQ&t=266. The point being, check out the audience reaction when Dr Who starts :)

I was squinting but saw nothing!

I remember Patrick Troughton as my first doctor, the Doctor with the recorder. My school friends preferred Jon Pertwee and Tom Baker, as they were rejuvenated, and we just grew older, but I never got over the loss of Patrick Troughton. The first quirky Doctor.

We were never afraid of the Daleks but when the Cybermen were on, we were terrified. By the end of a Cybermen episode, I would have to walk my two younger brothers to the toilet, a mere twenty feet walk down a corridor from our living room, convinced one of them would wet himself before he got there! I think the Cybermen were my first genuine fear from childhood, followed by Dracula.

Somewhere in the late 80's, the BBC had a massive costume sale, as it closed down one of its storage warehouses, and they just dumped whole piles of costumes across the floor of a massive space, in nine foot high mountains and you could just clamber up and through picking stuff out and buying by weight. The clothes were from all sorts of TV shows , some going back twenty years. It was an amazing free for all, a total jumble sale, without trestle tables.

I managed to get some obscure monster costume from Dr Who... wonder where it is now? And a huge period costume in white and silver, which I'd wear on Halloween.

Ah, those good old days...
