What's the stupidest holiday around in your country?
In the US, it would be Halloween. Eggs getting thrown around, getting sprayed with shaving cream and toilet paper getting spread around. However they do collect for UNICEF.

Halloween is a holiday in the US? Do you get a day off work for it?

Here's a Wiki article on it:Harbal wrote:Halloween is a holiday in the US? Do you get a day off work for it?

Is it a holiday? This is a partial answer from Wiki:
"Some academics, however, support the view that Halloween began independently as a solely Christian holiday."
Also:
"It was not until mass Irish and Scottish immigration in the 19th century that Halloween became a major holiday in North America."
From a quick study, I see no indication that businesses close up for Halloween. I see indication to the contrary that more business is done on Halloween.

I doubt if the Celts 'attended halloween costume parties'. Or wore superhero suits.Philosophy Explorer wrote:Here's a Wiki article on it:Harbal wrote:Halloween is a holiday in the US? Do you get a day off work for it?

I'm not sure what you mean by the word "holiday". In the context you are using it and in the UK, holiday would mean a day off work. So, do you get a "holiday" from work for halloween?Philosophy Explorer wrote: Is it a holiday?

Isn't a holiday when you don't go to work?Philosophy Explorer wrote:I amended my post which answers your question.Harbal wrote:I'm not sure what you mean by the word "holiday". I don't know but it definitely wouldn't involve pumpkins.Philosophy Explorer wrote:

Most definitions agree with that. Learner's Dictionary says:vegetariantaxidermy wrote:Isn't a holiday when you don't go to work?Philosophy Explorer wrote:I amended my post which answers your question.Harbal wrote: I'm not sure what you mean by the word "holiday". Oh well, if Marion Webster said that then it must be true.Philosophy Explorer wrote:Most definitions agree with that. Learner's Dictionary says:vegetariantaxidermy wrote:Isn't a holiday when you don't go to work?Philosophy Explorer wrote:

No, most people are perceptive enough to realise without the need for one.vegetariantaxidermy wrote: Not even a Superman costume?

Merriam-Webster and their definition says a holiday means businesses close.vegetariantaxidermy wrote:Oh well, if Marion Webster said that then it must be true.Philosophy Explorer wrote:Most definitions agree with that. Phil, for the purposes of this thread, will you just say what constitutes a "holiday"?

Being that this is the trend now in the US, a holiday is a celebration of tradition (for your country you'll have to tell me what is a holiday).Harbal wrote:Phil, for the purposes of this thread, will you just say what constitutes a "holiday"?
