As awful as that institution was, some good came out of it. "Amazing Grace" is a very popular song.Sam I. Elle wrote:The Institution of SlaveryPhilosophy Explorer wrote:I can think of several possibilities. But I'm sure you have your own ideas.

And that's the problem with your Disney view of history.Philosophy Explorer wrote: Maybe teaching the Indians scalping could be right up there. Many an American movie features that.

Yes, Disney tried to sanitize the British atrocities.Arising_uk wrote:And that's the problem with your Disney view of history.Philosophy Explorer wrote: Maybe teaching the Indians scalping could be right up there. Many an American movie features that.

No, the American Indians scalped before the Europeans got there. What was an atrocity is that the Europeans made it commercially profitable and the Yank has kept the tradition up.thedoc wrote:Yes, Disney tried to sanitize the British atrocities.

I thought it was the French who taught the Native Americans to take scalps.Arising_uk wrote:No, the American Indians scalped before the Europeans got there. Nope, some tribes did it before but it was rare. Scalping has been practiced all over the world but what the Europeans did in America was to put a bounty on the practice to instill fear which also incentivised the practice.thedoc wrote:I thought it was the French who taught the Native Americans to take scalps.

Elevenses and the afternoon tea-break get my vote.
Used to be the fag-break and down the pub Friday lunchtime, bosses an' all, and writing off the afternoon but we've become American about such things.
