No, the American Indians scalped before the Europeans got there. What was an atrocity is that the Europeans made it commercially profitable and the Yank has kept the tradition up.

I thought it was the French who taught the Native Americans to take scalps.

Nope, some tribes did it before but it was rare. Scalping has been practiced all over the world but what the Europeans did in America was to put a bounty on the practice to instill fear which also incentivised the practice.
