How much trouble, ill-being, disappointment and suffering we would avoid if we all could emulate Diogenes...

How to be free

"Diogenes made a virtue of extreme poverty as he continued to pursue the Cynic ideal of self-sufficiency: a life which was natural and not dependent upon the luxuries of civilization. Believing that virtue was better revealed in action and not theory, his life was a relentless campaign to debunk the social values and institutions of what he saw as a corrupt society."

This is as true today as it was at the very beginnig of Mankind. This truth has been restated in words and action down through the history of Man by many wise men such as Diogene's teacher, Socrates and also Jesus and Buddha. This truth was originally affirmed in the story of Adam and Eve. Man's choice for freedom always stands before him as a choice between Having and Being.

Unfortunately, we can't afford to make such a choice anymore.

We don't 'have' anything, but as far as the social farce is concerned, we have to pretend that we do...and that we care.

And without society and its vanities and formalities, no man can survive today.

I'm sure people would have said the same in Diogenes' time, but he managed.

That said, I'd rather live in a barrel in sunny Athens than in cold Britian.
