Re: ALL LEGAL RESTRICTIONS ON PROSTITUTION SHOULD BE IMMEDIATELY ABOLISHED
Bob, you can't have it both ways. You can't claim that "all legal restrictions on prostitution should be immediately abolished" and then turn around and claim that eight-year-old girls would not be able to engage in the practice. We know that children do in fact become prostitutes when this is legally permitted.
But, even if we assume that magically no one will engage in prostitution who is underage, what about people who have mental disabilities? A lady who is age 30 but with the mind of a seven-year-old? Is it okay for her to be a prostitute?
Even if one made prostitution legal, that still does not justify no government regulations governing prostitution. You would have been better off, in arguing for legal prostitution, had you pointed out that the government could protect the young, and people with mental disabilities from being used as prostitutes. But, by abandoning the advantages of government entirely, you boxed yourself into a corner that few will support.

That's called the age of consent. I think you will find that it covers the 'eight year old' dilemma. He didn't say it should be exempt from following the laws of the country, just that laws shouldn't specifically target prostitution eg You wouldn't be allowed to murder prostitutes, or prostitutes to murder their customers.
Coercing a mentally defective to have sex would be rape in civilised countries.

Sorry, we're not talking about protecting the young or those with disabilities. There are laws that protect them from all kinds of things. We're talking about adults paying for sex, and there is absolutely no reason for the government to prevent it.Science Fan wrote: ↑Mon Jun 19, 2017 2:41 am Bob, you can't have it both ways. Bob, you have admitted that you disagree with your own opening post. You just admitted that we would still need the government to establish laws preventing children from being prostitutes, as well as those with mental disabilities. This means that you have admitted that the government needs to maintain at least some restrictions on prostitution.
This is even before we get into issues regarding workers' safety and information asymmetries that the government can assist us in dealing with.
You should have simply argued that prostitution should be legal --- within certain government-imposed limits. But, that is not the argument you made here. It's what you are arguing now, but not originally.

This is called the Bob shifting in midstream maneuver. One of his favorite tactics.Science Fan wrote: ↑Mon Jun 19, 2017 4:01 pm Bob, you have admitted that you disagree with your own opening post. Re: ALL LEGAL RESTRICTIONS ON PROSTITUTION SHOULD BE IMMEDIATELY ABOLISHED
PhilX, for some reason, Bob can't figure out that any law that restricts children or the mentally handicapped from engaging in prostitution is a government regulation of prostitution, which undermines his claim. Bob can't agree that those laws should be in place while maintaining a position that no laws should exist that restrict prostitution in any way. Out of curiosity, I looked at vege's last comment, because vege always insists on disagreeing with me. So, there are now at least two people on here making an illogical assertion --- they agree that laws should prevent children and mentally handicapped from being prostitutes, while claiming that no law should restrict prostitution.
Apparently, logic is not for everyone?

Please don't throw your little semantic ploy at me. My position has clearly been that prostitution should be legal.Science Fan wrote: ↑Mon Jun 19, 2017 4:01 pm Bob, you have admitted that you disagree with your own opening post. Re: ALL LEGAL RESTRICTIONS ON PROSTITUTION SHOULD BE IMMEDIATELY ABOLISHED
Bob, your position was not just that prostitution should be legal. Your position was that "all legal restrictions on prostitution should be immediately abolished." That would include getting rid of laws that protect young children from engaging in sex with adults, because such laws would definitely be a "restriction" on prostitution.

Bob, my argument was anything but fallacious. It's based on the exact words you wrote in your opening post. It's not my fault you wrote down an argument that even you yourself reject.

No, because he mentioned prostitution specifically. He didn't say cancel out every law there is.
