China reacted to the revelation it had purged a network of CIA informants with a victory lap, boasting that the execution of a dozen spies within the last seven years was a triumph for its “anti-espionage activities.”
I sort of wonder if this isn't a ruse on the part of the Chinese government designed to discourage anyone from making further attempts. Maybe in reality they're simply in detention centers or something?
Or should espionage done during peacetime be punishable by death? Thoughts?
Doesn't matter if it's peacetime or during war. Spying is against the interests of the invaded country. If it results in people getting killed in the invaded country, then the spy forfeits his or her life.
As a divinely inspired prophet, I can tell you that capital punishment or prisons of any kind should be immediately abolished. If somebody commits a crime, the government can take one of the following three actions:
Punishment
a) For revenge (serves no positive purpose).
b) For rehabilitation (unsupported by psychological evidence).
c) For deterrence (government exploitation).
Restitution
Unequal protection under the law.
Control
Positive action designed to prevent recurrence.

We need concrete examples of what you're talking about.

Well, to tell you the truth, I may be the only prophet to walk the face of the Earth since John on the isle of Patmos, who wrote the book of Revelation in 96 AD.

yes, when espionage is discovered, politicians and bureaucrats should be executed
