Is American democracy still good?

Post by Above us only sky »

Recently tons of articles appearing in Chinese newspaper claiming American democracy is bad. Many of those articles are quite long, Here is an excerpt from a newspaper in China:
“In the second presidential debate, instead of discussing future policies, both candidates violently attack each other’s personal virtues, but neither are people of great virtues…The benefits of political competition in western system has gone…clever rhetoric has replaced honesty and ability… American democracy has lost the moral high ground, this time, America, the greatest “democracy preacher” on earth should have a rest…”
In your opinion, did American democracy lost its appeal and it is no longer a good system? Why?

Democracy is the only check against tyranny. Unfortunately, political elections don't reflect the will of the people since only a small fraction of the population actually casts a vote. Two large contingents of people are those who don't bother to vote and those under the age of 18, but there are other groups denied a vote due to things like dementia or imprisonment. Under the AEP, the traditional method of voting would be replaced by modern sampling techniques that count the opinions of everybody.

And what about the people who don't have an opinion? Doesn't it matter what they think?

Everybody's opinion counts, including those having no opinion, and should be included in a political election. In this case, a person would not be voting for anybody.

Dumb question.
American democracy has never been good.

It took 100 years before it was close to a democracy. Those allowed to vote for Lincoln was around 5% of the population.
It's always been closely controlled by the establishment, and the two party system gives a choice of two almost identical persons.

Mostly because there is no one worth voting for.

American democracy has never been what I would call good. It has usually been better than this, but it's had more low points than high.

The present debacle is due half to the Republican party's selling out to the lowest [tax] bidder over the past three or four decades, systematically jettisoning its honest, literate and patriotic members, cozying up to Big Religion and Big Guns, and half to mass media: news-as-entertainment; staged "reality" shows, celebrity-cult and systematically jettisoning its honest, literate and patriotic journalists.

Whatever comes out of this embarrassing auto-da-fe, it won't be pretty. It will, perhaps, be cathartic.

None of you understand that the quality of candidates for U.S. president is dictated by the salary the position offers. Unfortunately, the most important position in the world has a salary that might be appropriate for a middle manager of a small corporation. The president should receive a larger salary than any CEO in America. In fact, I offer an even better solution. The president should not be offered a salary at all, but 0.5% of every U.S. tax dollar that is not flushed down the toilet, and a bonus for every drop of American blood that is not shed in vain. I guarantee you that the next president would not be a Donald Trump, a Hillary Clinton or anybody else on an ego trip, but somebody who can actually make things happen!
