Melzack, the theory of the Neuromatrix and the 'sentinent neural hub'

Is the mind the same as the body? What is consciousness? Can machines have it?

Melzack, the theory of the Neuromatrix and the 'sentinent neural hub'

Post by notinavat »

Hi all,

I wonder if any of you good folk might already know (or care to learn anything) about the topic as mentioned in the title?

I've a friend who works in pain management who would very much like to know what (if anything) the philosophically-minded know and think about about 'neuromatrix theory' and the so-called 'sentinent neural hub'. He does seem to think something of practical import to his import to his obviously important work 'hangs' on this theory and wonders what philosophers of mind make of it and how well recieved/ifluential it is.

I know it has gathered some attention from philosophers of mind - you'll find it, for example, discussed for 4 or 5 (short) pages by Dale Jacquette in 'The Philosophy of Mind: The Metaphysics of Consciousness' - you cna preview the relevant part here: https://goo.gl/NJue57 . I also know its mentioned in philosopher/neuroscientist Georg Northoff's 'Philosophy of the Brain: The Brain Problem' ( goo.gl/n17uW9 )

You can find an 'accesssible' statment of the theory in a Scientific American piece here:

http://www.scientificamerican.com/artic ... 09/?page=1

And in a more scholarly (pay-wall free) form here :

I know a bit of philosphy but philosophy of mind isn't my forte an, to be honest, I really don't keep well enough to do serious research on this myself. So, if anybody feels like chipping in their tuppence worth it would be greatly appreciated by both of us.

Thank you
