Re: If a tree falls in space, does it really make a sound?
A tree falling causes a vibration. Well, a tree hitting something causes vibration. In outer space, the tree has nothing to do but fall, which is why they call it free fall. Not very much bonking into things going on, but it happens now and then. A sound only occurs when something has the ability t...

Re: The 'simulation hypothesis' title major flaw
On the contrary, we have no knowledge that our reality is a simulation. That is not contrary to what I said. I agree with it. No you don't, this was your statement:- 'On the contrary, both proposals say that we have nothing but awareness of the reality being simulated.' You are stipulating a plausi...

Re: Evolution question
As far as I know, primates (like us) are the only animals who taste with their tongues. Most other mammals taste with their noses. Snakes and lizards smell with their tongues. Who knows if any of their ancestors had it reversed? I'm not sure archeology can tell us that. Perhaps our (primate's?) tas...

Re: Before and after: the universe has everything?
Do you have a link for this one then? Where are you learning these facts? How do you suppose to find a link to what's unknown? Duh... Facts? Are you saying I am quoting facts? Double duhh... You first post implied that actual physicists are looking for this thing you've apparently just made up then...

Re: The tortoise and the hare
No you're just trying to put your own spin on what I've posted and trying to extend it. Show me where I was talking about the hare passing the tortoise which isn't my concern (but yours apparently) as a race can refer to any part of a racecourse, but the additional information clearly covers where ...

... so when you move up that foot, I'll be ahead 1/10 foot so that no matter what you move, I'll be ahead. This is incorrect and doesn't follow from the preceding argument. Example to the contrary: If the hare moves 20 feet, it will lead the tortoise by 8 feet. You haven't read carefully enough bec...

Re: The tortoise and the hare
So what are the so-called math errors? Surely Zeno didn't word the problem with such sloppiness. I isolated four: ... so that no matter what you move, I'll be ahead. Because the finish line is (unstated, but presumably) beyond the calculable point at which the two pass each other.Philosophy Explorer wrote: ↑Mon Jul 16, 2018 12:07 am ... to which wf asks
"How do you account for me winning all the races?"
I counted at least three mathematical errors in the text of the OP. There's probably more.

Re: If an Alien Life Form...
If an alien life form could observe global human behavior, what would be the human events and activities that would make the greatest impression on the alien? What would stand out as the most ordinary or representative behaviors? What would be the most unusual or extraordinary human endeavors? What...

Re: Why Physicalism is Wrong
If you think the standard MWI fully explains it then I'm afraid you didn't quite grasp the measurement problem yet, which is getting obvious from your comments. Maybe you could explain your notion of the measurement problem to my feeble mind. I can look it up. Wiki says "the problem of how (or...

Don't misquote me. Sorry. Didn't realize I had stuck that bit within your quote. I moved it. On the contrary, we have no knowledge that our reality is a simulation. That is not contrary to what I said. I agree with it. All we have is knowledge of our reality and that there might be something genera...

Ok, so what are the two hypothesis's'ss? hypothi... VR hypothesis (what most of the pop articles/movies envision, like Inception ) - a kind of brain in vat scenario, where consciousness is not part of the 'simulation'? VR is one, yes. Experiencer, time, and the simulation mechanism are all real, an...

Re: Why Physicalism is Wrong
Why stick to the standard MWI, when it doesn't actually solve the measurement problem? Sure it does. All the interpretations do, but they do it differently. The reason it is a problem is there is no empirical differences (falsification tests) between them. That's why they are interpretations, not t...
